umm wait... what? wait...im not sure whats happening here...is that satire I hear or just jibberish..I cant tell. Im not sure you can feel betrayed when you yourself are a soulless betrayer.
I agree with his point. The only thing the media likes better than building something up is tearing it down. It's how they exercise their power as the arbiters of perception. In fact, they've become so enthusiastic about tearing down Toyota that you have stuff like the ABC thing where they tampered with the electronics. A lot of people like to demonize the media, but I think if you understand their motivation (ratings, money, money, and oh yeah, money), you can take them for what they are. Take the good and leave the bad, so to speak. it takes a bit of effort to weed out the senationalism and bias, but it's worth it. I don't think it's a good idea to get all your news from one source, as much as that source may agree with your worldview. That leads to closed-off thinking and a lack of new ideas.

Sorry, still working on figuring out the quote feature. Intended to add to Tom-Spangler's post on the media and money. Yes, the media is motivated by money...just like any other business. It is the same with the health care industry, the auto industry, and even the defense industry. In the last 30-40 years, all business has made a science of maximizing profit, often at the expense of the people they ostensibly serve. Not sure what the answer is, but I find it difficult to ignore.

Not to flounder this, or have my right-leaning, Obama-disliking, media-is-awful-left-leaning-communists ways come out, but I have to agree with Dr.Hess on this issue. I really have not seen hardly any coverage of the Middle East as compared to when GWB was in office. I was in a politics class with a very left leaning professor last semester (the guy was very knowledgeable and informed) and it was apparent that nearly nothing was changing... and yet the media wasn't reporting it nearly as much. He was actually writing a research report on this very fact. Its not the Toyota issue thats at fault, its just the latest thing to take over.

Remember when MJ had the nerve to get his doctor to OD him on propofol? Non-stop coverage for what? 2 weeks? And what really happened during that time? Why, ahh, the House of Representatives passed Cap and Tax without mentioning it to anyone.

Correlation doesn't necessarily imply causation. I'd suggest that part of the reason we started hearing less about the wars in 2008 is that the economy imploded in that year.

Besides that, there just isn't that much that's "new" going on in the wars compared to the early-mid part of the decade when things were still developing. The Afghanistan surge got a fair bit of coverage, but other than that, I think most folks have accepted that we're in for a long slog in both countries.

You guys seem to feel this is something new. Just a short time ago the financial collapse of the US economy was the media headlines, that is until the H1N1 beat up hit the news and pushed the economy to page 20.

If you calculate the deaths by all flu sicknesses in 08 and 09 are they less than 2010, I will bet there is no significant difference, yet the press ate it up and sold millions of government supported flu shots along the way.

It wasn't even subtle

Iggy,

I'm not disagreeing with anything you said. I'm just saying that I have seen much less coverage of the war since Obama came into office, even though there hasn't been much less war. Even though I highly dislike Obama, this is one of the things I was happy about when he got elected, and one of the things I'm most disappointed that nothing has really happened. The fact that its not being aired on the news means that the public won't hear about it and will forget about it even more. You can't isolate the Toyota issue for this.

Over 1000 quakes over 3.5 this year (includes aftershocks) but a surprising number of 6.0+ in the last 45 days.

Chile planned for it and can take fairly good care of themselve, unlike Haiti, hence the lack of news on Chile. It's kind of like the flooding in New Orleans. Did you know there was an similarly devasting flood in Ohio within 6 months of the New Orleans flood. Nope, not many heard about it, as they those folks dealt with it and moved on.

I think the Toyota coverage is just all about the "new" exciting thing. Most Americans have a short attention span so things that have been going on a long time, war in the Middle East, Economic Turndown (still going on folks!), and even "Global Warming" is no longer on mentioned because it is old news!

I don't think its political its just old. Kinda of like how most folks here have car ADD, the media has news ADD.

You don't see Global Warming in the news much anymore because people started looking at it and realized what was being pushed on us was really a scam. Does anyone that isn't ignorant still believe that driving an SUV is going to destroy the Florida peninsula? Or that the UN can do anything except take our money and have a really good time? Given that the typical journalist takes a course called "Rocks for Jocks" and that's their total exposure to "science," can you honestly say "Oh yeah, if CNN tells me that this science is good, I believe it." Economic downturn? Haven't you heard? After inheriting it from W The Terrible, The O fixed it. Of course, we'll have to turn total control of our lives over to The O and worship him, but, hey, we lost 30K jobs last month and unemployment went down!!! WOO-HOO!!! Less jobs, less unemployment. Yup, there are 30K fewer jobs in our country and less unemployment. Makes perfect sense. If you took Rocks for Jocks.

Yes, Jack, no one cared about the midwest flood. Couldn't spin it to blame W. And people who don't riot and loot given the opportunity and who do take care of their own problems just aren't news.

i agree with you there. i have too much to do to make a foil hat.

americans look for the next big thing to occupy their stupid meaningless lives and talk about with the people at work that they think are friends. toyota is that big thing right now, before that it was tiger woods, now he is jealous of toyota and trying to get back to being the #1 topic.

the war sucks, i wish our people could come home. i thought that was what GW standing in front of a big "Mission Accomplished" sign on a boat what - 8 years ago - meant? apparently not. it's just a blurb now - "have a good night everyone, oh yeah 8 marines got blown up in iraq today" at the end of the 11 o'clock news. it's unfortunate that nobody seems to care except those with family over there.

how do you use nuke's on a small distributed guerrilla "army". You'd have to use a E36 M3 ton of them cause the force is spread all over. The other thing is that the fighters disguise themselves as locals all the time. How do you determine who to bomb?
