So, if your local public technology/arts middle school was looking to offer some type of after school/weekend program for kids or adults, what type of program would you like to see?

Intro to Machine shop.

1 Week Safety 1 Week Measurements 1 Week Hand Tools 1 Week Material Prep (how to cut pipe, sheet, stock) 1 Week Welding 1 Week Mill Etc Etc

No computers, just basics.

I'd also love to see a heavy equipment operators course offered on weekends locally, 9am-4pm Saturdays.

All of the above.

Any chance of a Mini-Formula SAE type of "get-together" where you guys build something to compete at a local Auto-X? Good for kids, good for adults, good for your local auto-x group, and good work/trade/skills to have.

Could also have a good opportunity for growth/friendly competition with other similar schools in your area.

Truth!

The availability of cheap 110 flux core MIG's is kind of scary if you think about it. How many trailers, cars and trucks are out there held together with pigeon crap welds about ready to fall apart because the welder was just learning how to use that $79 bad boy complete with hand held face shield?

good suggestions for the high school, but we need to drop a few grade levels, this is a 6th, 7th and 8th grade school in a somewhat rural/depressed part of NJ

I had wood shop in 7th and 8th grade. We did a week of safety for each machine we were about to use then a week of using them.

  • Proper use of pants & belts
  • Knowing when to shut the berkeley up and listen 101
  • Measuring tool introduction (applied math)
  • Common hand tool basics
  • How not to cut your hands/eyes/fingers off
  • Intro to cutting / drilling / etc
  • Real shop class basics with actual projects (my 6th grader has shop where they can't use anything sharp or electric so it is basically just rest)

My grade school had German classes after school in 7th/8th grade. We only had 8 students.

Guten Tag Mr. Koehler.

If you're look for something technical, the FIRST robotics competition is great. For middle school, there's the Lego competition where teams use the Lego Mindstorms kit to build and program a robot to do a specific task.

http://www.firstlegoleague.org/mission/support

For higher grades there's competitions for scratch building robots to do various tasks.

I don't know if you have any kind of budget to work with, so you might need to do some fundraising to get this off the ground.

Small "hobby-ish" shop class with CO2 powered races?

You'll need to log in to post.
