My brother Jack has acid reflux. Doctor prescribed some pills which he took according to Hoyle for one week but felt nauseous and headachy all the time. He talked to the Doctor who handed him a month's worth for free, "Stay with it".

Jack's an avid reader. He read somewhere that a teaspoon of vinegar in a glass of water twice a day will cure acid reflux. He did it. Works great! Problem solved. A week later he gets a call from the doctor's office; quit taking the medication, it causes liver cancer.

Great.

Scene 2: My son manages a restaraunt in Manhattan. The Souse Chef cut his hand pretty good, looks like stitches are required. Ian saw the guy 10 minutes later and he's got expresso coffee grounds matted into and around the wound. WTF? "Works mon, stopped da bleeding".

Hey, it's your hand.....

Got any of Grandma's cures that actually work?

Pee on a wound to kill germs if you have no antiseptic available.

Rub the cut end a fern frond on a insect bite to stop the itch.

Read in Nat Geo many years ago that some African tribes urinate into other peoples eyes as a means of fighting eye infection. I'm not sure that's what you are looking for.

I worked with race horses when I was young. Some of the really old guys had the weirdest cures - like cow flap poultice for a bowed tendon. Worse was "toad salve" which involved taking a boiled toad and bandaging it to the affected part. They claimed it worked... not so great for the toad though.

If you fillet an aloe Vera plant, and not chop it off the branch will heal and you still get the burn releaving gel out.

Fresh garlic is natures antibiotic. Also good for toothaches and I think on wounds. Apple cider vinegar for cold/cough as well as crushed ginger, lemon juice, and honey mixed with tea.

There aren't many home remedies that you take to help someone else out!

Grandma's cure for guests that overstayed their welcome was an enima. Seemed to be sure fire cure for whatever ailed them and was causing them to linger.

some self medicating is good. I have crohnes disease. I self medicate by taking fish oil, watching what I eat, and calming medication. Occasionally I have to take an immodium or two (same as when I was taking real medication)

But before I would self medicate, I would make sure the problem is not lifethreatening.

Coconut macaroons for radiation-induced fibrosis of the colon - helps some with IBS symptoms - and it's a cookie (some say it helps with Crohne's). Periwinkle and taxis plants can be whipped into some potent chemotherapies.

Every week I see patients who show up with a late-stage cancer diagnosis - mainly because they ignored symptoms or decided to deal with it "all naturally". Mostly they do it because they're afraid of the treatments. Almost all of them die before their time.

Lots of home remedies provided the basis for medical knowledge - some of them are valid, some are definitely not - that's the point of science - putting it through a controlled test to know what works instead of guessing.

I've got a family full of nurses, doctors, veterinarians, and the girlfriend is almost a dietitian. I know a whole lot of home remedies, most of them are food based. But home remedies work only for basic stuff--Garlic helps with immune system and is something of a natural antibiotic; vitamin C is amazing, Cranberry helps... down there, etc. If it isn't working in three days, you need something stronger.

Oh, my girlfriends Mom has MS. If she sees a bee around, she tries to provoke it and get stung. It happened on accident one time, and helped with the symptoms better than anything else for about 1.5 weeks. It happened on purpose 3 years later, and it helped again for 2 weeks. There have been actual studies into this, but nothing super conclusive. The general consensus is that if you aren't allergic, it really can't hurt.

I keep waiting for marijuana to be legalized for the purpose of home remedying as well.

A buddy of mine finally found the best medicine for his bad gout - Cherry juice. Does better than anything he's ever had prescribed.

It has to be dark cherry juice. Drinking the juice out of a jar of maraschino cherries isn't going to do it.

The dark cherry juice is thick and very dry & tart. The first time you go to drink it, it's pretty nasty. But after a week it's OK. And more pleasant than suffering from gout.
