For those out there that know about these things.
I'm looking to get a pair of speakers (no sub), bookshelf size, that are self powered and hopefully sub $200. I'm having a hard time even knowing where to look.
They will mostly be used for listening to music over my Apple TV, or running the TV through them when I'm watching a movie. They should sound good, but don't have to be great (just better than what is built into the TV). The room is not set up to be a home theatre, and space is limited (hence the self powered).
Anyone have any recommendations?

stupid good deal for $35 ish before shipping. Only downside for TV/Movie use is its not remotely controlled.

To kick this off, these were recommended:

Those are what i was going to link...
Alternatively, if you can come up with room for an integrated amp of some kind, i have a pair of Paradigm Titan V.3s that aren't doing me any good sitting in a box in my closet.
My other thought would be studio monitors.

Have you considered using one of those little mini amps and normal bookshelf speakers? That way you can have a little bit more flexibility in your system.
This one has a DAC in it if you want to attach it to your computer:

This one is cheaper and has an FM receiver built in:

I hadn't considered, as I didn't know about them. Hell, I want a mini tube one now.
Any of those minis work with a remote (then again, input signal should be enough)?
If you're open to a mini-amp and open to a DIY speaker, you can't go wrong with the Overnight Sensations. Parts-express has a kit that you glue, solder the crossover (they give a wiring diagram), and pop it together. You don't even have to cut anything. If you wanted to, it could be done in a weekend.

I should say, I'm open to it, but maybe not for this particular thing I'm trying to solve. This isn't my main area for listening (record player is in the basement), so this is more of an easy button for our living room. I think an "all-in-one" solution may be best here, but now you've really got me digging around!

Let me know what you'd be willing to get rid of them for. paul.przyborski@gmail.com

I should also throw one more out there, at half the price of the audioengine units:
Cerwin Vega XD3
Anyone have any experience?

On more to the mix, since someone mentioned studio monitors - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Numark-NPM5-Active-5--Studio-Monitors-106219009-i1482791.gc
I should, if I'm smart, keep my budget in mind. I have a CP car to finish and now have to buy a wireless router. When it rains...

The low end frequency response is lacking on the XD3 when compared to the NPM5s. That's all I got. (102 Hz vs 65 Hz)

M Audio speakers are great and cheap. Or you could get Event Opals.
