The MR2 is just about sold, but I can't find the freaking paper title! Some tiny piece of paper that I filed away 10 years ago is delaying the deal by another week at least. With all of the computer and paperwork reduction acts, I can't believe that you still need this in 2013. Just look it up DMV!
i once got an expedited title in 2 days..
Ohio's nice. Walk in to the title bureau. "Hi, I lost my title to X. Here's my ID."
(10 minutes later)
"Here's your replacement title, Mr. Knurled. That'll be $4.50. If you do find the old one, destroy it as it is no longer a legal document."
"Say, while I'm here, can we transfer this replacement title to this guy here?"
"Sure thing hon."
The more I read about how other states handle minor paperwork like this, the more I don't want to ever leave.
That was the hardest thing about moving to TN. Have to go to two different places to get anything done. In my experience here a title change takes 4-6weeks to get back from the state. I really miss a lot about Ohio...just not enough to ever move back.

Just about how it works in MS. Except swap "Hon" for "Darlin'" and you're pretty much there.
Seriously, can't keep up with a car title? Own any insurance policies or savings bonds, or a will?
The Cometec sticker that came with the gasket when I rebuilt it 5 year ago? In the file. The original owners manual from 1985? In the file. The bar napkin from my trip to Germany in 1988? In the file? Daughter's report card? Every one for 14 years. Documents to the Mitsubishi I sold 2 years ago? The dodge I sold 5 years ago? In the file.
Every scrap of paper you can imagine, every owner's manual and warranty registration, every significant document is either in the filing cabinet or in the safe.
Except this one.
In reply to pinchvalve:
Please pardon me. I thought you were one of those ADD youngsters.
Have you checked the glove box?
Yeah, nothing in there but lint. The car came with a bunch of paperwork, I know I had a folder labelled MR2 somewhere, but I have moved once and re-done my filing and storage at least twice since 1995. I found my divorce decree from 11 years back. My reminder to have my sperm tested post-vasectomy. WHERE THE HECK DID THE TITLE TO THE MR2 GO?!?!?!?
Until fairly recently, I'd keep the title in the glove box.
After recent events, I cleaned out all my cars' glove boxes. In one of them, I found my Social Security card.
THAT could have been a mess...
That's why I keep the titles in the glove box. If you want to steal my car, forge my signature(not difficult), it's yours.
But Got help you if I ever catch you.
Did you look in the folder marked "vehicle titles' in your file cabinet? That's where I keep mine.
If you have the hanging files, look underneath, sometimes I miss the actual folder and a paper will scoot to the bottom.
That's all I got.

Weird I just moved to Cookeville, TN. Then 10 days later bought a motorcycle. The title transfer was really easy. They didn't even ask for ID!? I expected to have to prove TN residency so I brought something from my work in TN and a bank account I set up the day before but they never even verified my name. Got the title in a week.
It was cheap too

You would think that reporting the car stolen would be kind of a big red flag in the title-transfer process.
At the very least, you could use the vehicle theft report as evidence that the title transfer was forged. And you might find out where your car went to.
Sadly, though, while Googling how to scrap a car that doesn't have a title, I found out some horrible things regarding the state of auto theft. Seems that they just hook the car on a tow truck and take it right to a shady scrapyard where it gets Granola'd within minutes, and a photocopy of a fake title is what goes on file. You wouldn't believe how pissed off I got when I read that.

The mail from Nashville must go through Memphis to get to Knoxville. Took 4 weeks to get the '80 BMW title and when we moved here in '06 it took 6 weeks to get my Ohio title transferred on the '82 BMW.
VS. Ohio where they print the titles right there in front of you.
FL DMV It's all an electronic title system. Order a paper copy of your title online? $2.50 - it just takes like two months to get to you. Go in person to get it printed? $85 and still might take two months. Blows my mind.

Really, buy a fireprood box for Christmas. $70 for peace of mind?

+1. Birth Certs. SS cards, Titles to car, deed to house, insurance policies. Craigslist 600lb floor safe. It isn't going anywhere.
plus two...those things are awesome.
RSVP to Pinchy: No, you don't need a piece of paper to sell a car.
The new guy needs a piece of paper to legally own the car.

unless you've owned the vehicle for more than 7 years. they expunge the system after 7 years, then you have to deal with columbus. in 1999 i got a truck from a buddy who bought it new in 1989 and never figured on selling it ever, so he lost the title. it literally took 2 hours at the local bureau to tell us that we had to do it through columbus, then it took them a month to get the title to him.

Yeah, that's what I have. Nicely marked and labelled and secured. A place for everything and everything in it's place. (when I sold my Honda, I had the original invoice from 1979 in there.)
Oh well, the gremlins got it somehow. Moving on, headed to AAA today. The buyer seems cool, I'll drop it another $50 for his trouble.
