I was riding behind a Mitsubishi SUV yesterday, stock steelies, no window tint, no body cladding...it had an honesty about it that made it cool. Something like this:
Then I read that the J70 is still in production, and it made me want a boxy, simple SUV.
maybe not old enough. '97 Explorer XLT with 302 and tow package. sadly, only 2wd.
I still like my 1st gen Durango.
Can we get a definition of "old school," here?
4wd 5 speed manual, was able to throw a kart in the back of it. Had a speed sensor issue so it always pulled to the right when I braked. Otherwise it was cool.

I think all of these qualify so far.
Personally, this is as old school as I got. This wasn't mine, but it looked just like it...and damn how I miss that truck.
For one I never owned...

Yeah, I agree. By the late 90s, SUVs had already become Mommy-mobiles. I say 1990 and older. XJs, Broncos, Bronco IIs, Blazers, Ramchargers, Land Cruisers, etc.
How about stick axle, body on frame, no front-wheel-only drive? Same frame as a pick-up truck?

Ooh, good call. How could I forget the Ramcharger. I learned to drive stick in one that looked just like this, except it had the base steelie rims. It was a 4 speed w/318ci. Well, technically it was a 4 speed, but you drove it like a 3 speed. 1st gear was so low, and the shifter so jello like and impossibly long throws that by time you shifted into 2nd, you were almost stopped again. So we always just took off from 2nd gear, never used 1st unless you were towing or offroading. I put a lot of miles on it, as it belonged to a good friend, who was my roomate for several years while we were in college.

I owned this for a short period of time. I wish it drove as good as it looked. Like many vehicles I've sold, I wish I still had it.

Knocks the XJ right out. Unibody, and was available in 2wd (although no FWD). And that's pretty old-school, if you ask me.
Well that's what i was questioning.... XJ is what.... early 80s chassis? With a 60s motor?
Yeah, early 80s chassis with largely 60s and 70s parts and a motor originally developed by brontosaurs.
hmmm.. almost sounds like my Disco would fit that definition, Tim
Having said that.. I enjoy knowing my SUV is a big brick of a vehicle instead of something psuedoshaped by a windtunnel
Old school means it has a frame and sealed beam headlights. I really hate almost all the current SUVs or whatever they call them now.
My Durango has a frame. No sealed beams though.
I also forget that I do have a '95 XJ Cherokee.

I lived in Maine in 1991. Not far from LL Bean, there was an ARO dealership that had gone out of business (Surprise!). The lot was empty and overgrown, but inside the showroom, there were two brand new AROs. I don't think I've ever seen one on the road.

This is exactly what my wife drove when I met her, except hers was blue. It was rad. She was rad.
