R. Lee Ermey has passed away. Straightening out maggots in the afterlife i’m sure.
Sorry to hear that, I've always liked him. He was only 74 - these days, that's kind of young to die.
In reply to stuart in mn :
Yeah, it’s weirding me out right now that he was only 42-43 when he made FMJ. He seems older than I am now......
He lived that long because God, himself, feared he'd show up at the Pearly Gates and chew his ass.
I maintain that his presence on film and TV, did more for Marine Corps recruitment than any one person in modern times.
He once owned and ran a whorehouse overseas. Interesting guy. He will forever be remembered as the "Gunny".
This popped on my news feed last night. One of those things you hope aren’t true. I believe pneumonia got him. He definitely should have gotten an Oscar for FMJ.
Dunno if it's true, but I read somewhere that he was originally hired as an advisor/consultant for FMJ, hired to teach the actor how to be a USMC DI. He was showing the actor and the director though he did such a good job at it that he fired the actor and put Ermey in the role, starting his acting career.
Another good one is Saving Silverman. Saving Silverman He kisses Jack Black on the lips. They asked him "Why did you kiss Jack Black on the lips?" His answer was something like "Six million dollars, that's why."

The version I'd heard was that he also ended up pretty much rewriting the lines for the part as well.
In reply to Duke :
He was also the janitors father on Scrubs. For the job Neil Flynn did playing Janitor throughout the series, he was perfect for a father figure.
I still use many of his FMJ insults on a regular basis.
Sad. Doctors said that had my daughter's pneumonia could have been fatal had she been very young or elderly. 74 is WAY too young. RIP.

Proabably so, but his first role was as a helicopter pilot in Apocolayse Now. I don't think he got to speak.
AC sez he owned a whorehouse "overseas."
He played a chopper pilot in Apocalypse Now.
Apocalypse Now was filmed in the Philippines in the 70's.
The Philippines has many whorehouses, US Service men until the bases blew up, retired US service men (they have a term for them. They retire from the Navy, say, move to Subic, party on down for about 6 months and drop dead.)
Gunny retired from the Marines with a medical discharge.
Maths: Gunny musta owned a whorehouse in the Philippines.

The way I understood it was he got the part after sending a tape of a 15min profanity paced insult tirade to the directors, while not repeating a single insult. Either way.
He was a technical advisor to Kubrick on the film. The lines they had write were unrealistic, so he re-wrote them. The actor playing the drill Sargent wasn't believible in his delivery. Ermey re-wrote the scenes and taped himself doing them. He bullied and bluffed his way into his pivotal role.
The actors playing the recruits were not allowed to practice with him. The lines, many ad-libed, were blasted in the actor's faces for the first time, and the reaction was genuine.
