So, learn me time, please.

I collected and read comics fairly seriously from 1985 or so until the mid-'90s.  Since then I have picked up various titles off and on, if I know the creator(s) or they look interesting.

Throughout that period I was primarily intersted in DC's alternative titles, and various indies.  First, Dark Horse, Epic (Marvel's more experimental line), and other smaller-press folks.

What I don't know much about, and haven't read much of, are Marvel's blockbuster titles.  Spidey, Thor, Cap, those guys.  Classic X-men.  I'm familiar with the MNU movie characters fomr, well, the movies.  But I'd like to read some classic Marvel stuff from the '60s and '70s that the current universes grew out of.  Some of the key story arcs.

At the library on Saturday, I found a number of Marvel Essential compilation books that looked likely, but they were all de-colorized.  I'll read them if necessary, but I was hoping to see color art, since that is a big part of the experience.

I'm not looking to buy an expensive pile of rare back issues.  Compilations are fine, but as noted above, I'd prefer color to B&W unless the original was B&W.    Even specific titles / sub-titles or issue ranges to look for will help.  Thanks!

This is the extent of my Marvel knowledge, pre Iron man movie.

Not helpful, I know.  Watched it a bunch when I was a kid.

I bought my wife a subscription to Marvel Unlimited one year.  I thought it was worthwhile.  You get access to most of the Marvel library online.  The comics are full color but it takes some time to get used to the format.
