Am I the only one that has to stick to Sim racing right now due to the lack of funds? Man I would love to get back into Autocross, but I can't even afford that. What is everyone else doing to feed their addiction when they can't race for real?

i just pretend i'm racing every time i drive anywhere. of course, most of my driving is done on moderately twisty roads with minimal traffic..

plus a bunch on AutoX. Heck, I'm losing like hell every weekend, but it sure feels good to throw the thing around every once in awhile. And you'll meet a lot of other people who just care about the damn cars. Costs me $30, and another two bucks to fill up the air tank before I go.

If ya don't have the $30, just don't go nuts on the street, dude. We don't really have a Sim League around here, but a lot of us play Forza online. Which sim are you looking at?

Right now I am playing GT4 but hopefully in the next 3-4 months I will be purchasing a PS3 for when GT5 is released. I would love to AutoX but I have a 03 Sentra SpecV with 170K on the clock and no back up car. I don't want to burn the clutch since I think it is the factory unit. Maybe in a year or two I can get back in. And don't worry...no going crazy on the street for me. I got a $170 ticket about 10 years ago and haven't had one since.

Throw out a GT4 challenge. I'll take you up on it, and there's a few others here that will probably do the same.

+100. I mean a PS3 is what $300 and the game will be $50-60 when it comes out plus the cost of online play (I don't know what that is but it can't be cheap)

Don't get me wrong, I see your logic, but I can get a used PS3 and GT5 (when it releases) for about $200. Even though I can get a POS car for that price, the wife doesn't want me to get another car right now. And if my DD didn't have 170K on it I'd AutoX it.

Yeah I'm sticking to sim racing for now. My DD is too new and under warranty to want to race it, especially because my old van (my only other vehicle) keeps trying to kill whoever drives it, so my choices are sim racing, risk mucking up my car or voiding the only warranty I've ever had on a car, or risk death by catastrophic fiery van wreck. I'll take sim racing.

I'd take you up on the GT4 but my PS2 took a massive dump and my PS3 isn't old enough to have backward compatability (which is dumb). Ever try live for speed? It's only like $30 or something and you can do private servers and stuff (which gran turismo 5 prologue won't grrr). Also, $200 could pay for quite a long iRacing subscription

I've look at a bunch of avenues for sim racing and GT5 looks like the best. When it releases it is going to have some really cool cars and tracks and it will have online racing. I'm kinda waiting for it.

I can only pray that it releases. Racing games are the only thing I have ever been good at. My good friend laughed at me for an hour last week for my "awesome" Mario skills.

PS3 Online play is free as long as you have internet at your house...

I can't believe XBox makes you pay twice to use the same internet.

Love GT, first "console" game I ever found that was anything like the PC games I played before I got divorced (w/child support, couldn't buy a new PC every year anymore). I'm no longer hating myself for switching to Forza, especially since I only had to buy the games (found F2 for about 12 bux in the used bin at Gamestop, but paid full price for F3 when it came out) and the "Xbox Live" connection. Our boarder actually bought the Xbox, our arrangement is that if I can't play F2 or F3 online, he won't be able to play his beloved "Halo" online, either.

Wild thing happening now: Turn 10/Micro$oft seriously screwed up the online for F3. "We're bringing you drivers and the gamers closer together!", they say. WTF? After I've spent the last year and a half trying to keep the little bastards OUT? No thanks.

If Polyphony Digital & Sony give GT5 the kind of online choices that F2 used to do, I'll buy a PS3 on the very day that GT5 is released. Funny thing, that...I didn't buy my PS2 until GT4 was released.

Still, though..I'm in a different place in life than you are right now. I've actually got money to "waste" on this nonsense. If you don't, I still think you should spend your money on autoX, or HPDE, or any school with professional or successful local amateur drivers (Bondurant/Barber/Russell/Roos, or the school at your local track). Seriously, even an HPDE (with local instructors) at your local track, or the "novice" program at a local autocross can be done for the price of a new game system and game on "release day". Yeah, spending your dough on "virtual" stuff might last longer, but IMO-if you want to get better in real life, there is absolutely no substitute for planting yourself in the seat, listening to somebody who's faster than I am, and trying to do what they tell me to do.

Because so many of these games are so good, the world is full of "virtual" racers. I can't help but notice that there's so many more of them than there are real ones.

I suck at anything other than GT4. Well, I do okay at Wii Tennis and bowling. I just loose interest in other games faster than it takes me to get any good at playing them.

I keep going back to the AutoX option in my mind. If I can get the wife talked in to buying a $300 beater, I might just go that route. Thanks for the advice.

I can sympathise on not being able to autoX. For the first time in 8 years of driving do I have a car that will pass tech. Now I can't get sundays off, nor can I afford to take them off if I had the option

When I was young and dumb I had a 93 mustang 4cyl that I used to AutoX. I beat up on that thing so hard but it never really broke. I wish I had that car back for a second car.

Keep your eyes open, and keep in touch with us. Some of the guys around here have found Miatas for that. It's one of the reasons we call it "The Answer" around here. Heck, I'm even thinking of getting one myself.
