One bit of bias that would need to be checked for is prevalence of usage of various drugs in the population.  I'd assume marijuana is more common than a lot of harder drugs.

It's just frustrating trying to have a decent discussion and be pigeon-holed by someone who seems to automatically think they know what you're going to say. Especially on a topic that I have first hand knowledge and experience with that is very important to me. For them to default to what is essentially political mud-slinging is very frustrating.

Woah man. That's heavy.

I have a theory that marijuana leads to bad craft beer. Craft beer drinkers are notoriously frequent pot smokers. Stone brewing was literally named after that.

People talk about marijuana enhancing flavors, but it doesn't do so equally. I find it accentuates textures and enhances fundamental flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. That's what your tongue actually tastes. Everything else we perceive as flavor is aroma, and marijuana does *not* enhance that. (Hence why I like to sip gin and tonic while lightly stoned: cold, carbonated liquid feels nice, and there are nice sweet, bitter, and sour flavors.)

So brewers get stoned and enjoy the sensations of fundamental flavors - sweet and bitter - in their beer, and fail to realize that it lacks subtle and complex aromas.

Seriously describes the Southwest Michigan beer scene.

All that said, I am in my 40s, never used weed.  I can't stand the smell.  Might be willing to try edibles, but they aren't legal in my state, and while my employer doesn't do random drug tests, other potential future employers do.  I'm all for legalization, but want to make sure impaired driving (and heavy equipment use in general) laws can cover drug use appropriately.

Edibles are legal in Ohio, medically.  I know three people with prescriptions.  It does at least one of them pretty good, as in, turns him from a nervous ball of anxiety unable to do anything, to a reasonable facsimile of a functional adult.  Like Prozac without all the horrible side effects.

Guess I should have clarified about recreational vs medical in the state. I suspect it could probably help me, too.  But being able to pass a drug test (and not lie on a 4473) is more important to me for now.

If you don't adhere to the politically correct point of view, this will always be the result.  This is why I scoff at the idea of open honest discussions.  Granted this place is still way better than most of the internet because people are more human towards one another.  It's still far from the perfection some think has been achieved.  Even if your point is based on evidence and partly true, the non-PC views will always get downvoted here.  PCness is societies highest virtue.  Your personal knowledge and facts will always take a backseat to that.

I'd argue government creates more epidemics than it solves, but that requires thinking on a larger more historic scale.  Use the opioid crisis a case study and show me how I'm wrong.  Govt open borders is allowing massive amounts of dubious quality fentanyl into the country as we sit comfortably in our nice homes too.  Bigger government only creates bigger government and less flexibility at the local and family level.

That's the part I laugh about most.  I challenge simple political correctness, and people go straight to insults and name calling.  It's predictable, lazy and dishonest.  Ask anyone around here that actually knows me.

All you've done is proven that you aren't open to honest discussion and that your highest value is being PC.

So much for open and honest.....  those are so far down on any realistic list it's nearly comedic at this point.

I dare any of you to have an open honest discussion with someone that doesn't agree with you.  I'd say many of you cannot do it.

Two general points that are not directed towards anyone in particular.

1. Drinking increases on the weekends and although we need to own our words we should also be tolerant of others because that's what friends do.

2. The Mods know point #1 and would probably rather be wrenching than watching the board so expect a sensitive trigger finger on Thread Locks.

Kinda sounds to me that you're virtue signaling. Positioning yourself as the voice of hard-nosed realism. You're all about facts while others wallow in correctness. I've never liked the term PC because I think that all groups do it. Try talking about inheritance taxes among conservatives for instance. No, now it's got to be "death taxes". Every group has it's accepted  jargon.

Nope. I don't. I'm making pot jokes because it fits the theme of this thread, and I believe injecting humor into the situation will be more productive than arguing.

If you would like me to make a cogent argument to refute your statements: If you read my responses as serious rather than the obvious pot jokes they are, then I would call that evidence that you are taking things too seriously and reading antagonistic intent into interactions that does not exist. If you did that with my pot jokes, it is likely you have also done that with other innocuous interactions on this forum.

I agree, I dislike when people use "PC" to "shut down" free speech. However, I find that if I'm respectful when speaking, I generally won't be shut down (not specifically on grm, though it helps here too). I don't think it is just me, I think it applies in general.

Also, I recently learned about the Chicago principles, which I think are pretty cool, and I will strongly recommend my children attend a school that has something similar if they decide to attend university. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_principles
