My fiance and I both got Big Agnes sleeping bags and are very happy with them. They require an inflatable pad to be any good, but that's something you want anyway. They're kind of a nifty design because they're only insulated on one side. The pad slides into the other. The idea is, when you're laying on the ground, all the insulation on one side crushes down anyway and does you no good, so don't bother with it.

Result is a sleeping back that packs up a bit smaller, keeps you just as warm, and is actually wide enough for a side-sleeper like myself. We've had good luck with them camping when hiking and putting them in the back of the van for races.

Another vote for the modular system, gives you tons of flexibility depending on the conditions you will be using it in.

I have used a North Face Blue Kazoo year round since 1992. It packs to about the size of a football and weighs about 2 pounds. It is a little cool in the winter, but a wool blanket or 2 fixes that. The coldest that I have used it was about -10F.
