I have a nice little espresso machine that I've had for several years. It stopped working this morning. Trying to decide whether to attempt to repair it myself, find someplace to do repairs on it, or to just replace it (the manufacturer will give a 20% discount).
Problem seems to be the pump that pushes water through the grounds, or something in the circuit that activates it. No noise or anything when I push the button. Espresso machine is a DeLonghi EC 702, if that matters to anyone.

Mine has a lot of point to point wiring and would be super easy to repair should something fail. Not sure about that one.
This sounds unrelated to your problem but for me I've found that running a few cups of hot water+citric acid through has really kept things clean with the hard water I have at my place.
In coffee machines, it usually some safety switch that dies. I've had pretty good luck just bypassing the things. Granted, that's early on race day, with 50 guys and gals, dressed in white, wondering when the coffee is going to be ready. I've destroyed 3 urns so far, and told the club to rent them from now on.
The coffee was ready on time though.
You might try contacting Ruflet(sp). He's in the appliance repair business.

Whats the worst that could happen?

This. There is generally some sort of thermal overload in the circuit that fails.
