There is a dachshund that lives in an apartment right by my girlfriend's. I hate that dog. It is a hyper-aggressive little E36 M3. There have been numerous occasions where I thought I'd need to kick it to keep it from attacking my girlfriend's dog or me.

Here's their "online survey" results: http://blogs.discovery.com/news_animal/

The editor is totally butchering this table. Click the link and go down about half way.

Dunno about how scientific that is. Rhodesian Ridgebacks got pretty mellow results. I'd kinda go along with that, as long as they don't get pissed off. Bruzer, son of Killer, would totally ignore small dogs actually biting him. He would kind go out of his way to bowl a Chow over though.

My Shi tsu, while loving and cartoonishly playful, can be an annoying little freak when she is scared. Two of my friends, in particular, scare the E36 M3 out of her (literally), and we don't know why. And she barks EVERY time the door opens. She is easily forgiven though because of her good nature, and she only barks a few times - just so that everybody know someone is there (even if we see them come in first).

Another shi-tsu we had, Murphy, was a fearless explorer. She didn't bark at people and generally went about her way getting herself into mischief. Nobody disliked her (except Molly - see above - who she decided one day that she did not want to live anymore - Murphy now has a new home).

My grandmother's Lasa Apso is just a plain old little E36 M3 head. And now he lives with us. I berkeleying hate him.

my parents have Llasas. there are llasa owner support groups on yahoo iirc. they're usually alpha dogs, and very stubborn. my parents dogs have my mom trained so well that if they don't want to walk to the back door, they just stand there, and she'll pick them up and carry them to the door. they do this nearly every time too. my dad always says they're lucky they're cute cuz if they were ugly, they'd be dead.

I have a Beagle and a Shih Tzu /Poodle mix. They're both... interesting.

The beagle is MUCH smarter, but also much more stubborn and inclined to do what she wants to do rather than what you want her to do.

The Shi-Poo is just dumb. Treat her like she's 3 jacks short of a deck and she makes much more sense. Seriously, I wonder if she's brain damaged. Sweet little dog, but saying she's dumb as a stump is insulting to stumps.

I like well behaved small dogs. I think that people give small dogs a pass on aggression because it's just soooo cute to watch Toothy the Chihuahua go ape shizzle at the mailman! Just look at him! Hackles all raised like he's going to bite!

It's allowing this kind of behavior that gets Toothy an express trip to the SPCA when he bites a child who gets too close to the food bowl.

Well trained small dogs can be very good family pets.

My girlfriend's sisters just bought two mini-dogs.

One is a Jug (Jack Russle/Pug mix) - Most anoying dog ever. Has 150% energy, all the time, needs about 5 minutes of rest in order to have just as much energy again. Weighs in at a hefty 15lbs or so, and has a habit of jumping straight at my crotch. Barks all the effing, time. SERIOUSLY. ALL THE TIME. I hate the dog.

The other is a Mini-Dachshund - Very sweet dog, with just enough energy to be perky, but not so much as she won't lay down on your lap. Only annoying thing about her is that she whines/cries instead of barks, but I'd rather her cry quietly than bark.

I much prefer her sisters Rottwieler, much better dog that actually listens to you and does dog things...like stays on the floor, and leaves you alone. I hate clingy dogs.

My girlfriend got a collar for her dog to keep her from barking in the middle of the night. Dog isn't a constant barker, but every now and then feels the need to just let us know that she hears something outside.

The collar is really nifty. It is not a shock collar and doesn't hurt the dog at all. Instead, it sprays a jet of citronella when the dog barks. This is really irritating, but totally humane. And very effective.

See if you can find one for the "Jug".

Here is a link for the collar.

I know someone who has a Chiwawa. It looks like a tiny Doberman. I hate this dog too. Dumb as E36 M3, not trained at all, pees all over herself when she sees you, and is constantly fidgeting. 150% energy is a good way to describe this stupid little thing. She is constantly jumping, spinning in circles, and prancing in place.

Ha, when she gets close to me I just look at her and say "Don't touch me." in a firm, less-than-excited manner and she usually leaves me alone and goes after someone else.

My job is walking property for environmental site assessments. The only dog I've ever had that actually tried to bit me was a dachsund. I took a 100% serious swing at him with my machete. Missed him. I hate every dachsund I 've come across. They bark incessantly for no reason know to me.

A friend of mine had a small poodle or something. He saw it get attacked by a German Shepard. Instinctively, he went after the German Sheppard, kicked it in the side of the chest, and proceeded to pound its face with his fist.

His neighbor (the dog's human) came out and yelled "Stop!"

He yelled back "No!" and went on his way beating the E36 M3 out of this dog. Then he stopped, gathered up his injured poodle thing, and went on his way. Needless to say, the German Shepard had a hard time getting up, but he healed. I think the poodle ended up surviving, but I don't know how healthy he was after that.

I hate Yorkies. They always seem to want a piece of my ankles. With one major exception, Midas, my step-daughters pet. Weighs 4 pounds, but is well behaved, gets along well with the other dogs in the house, and is generally a lot of fun to have around. My wife has a mini daucshound (SP!!) that is also pretty cool. I just guess these two have had good nurturing, because they are two breeds that can be real problems. No furry footballs in my house.

My grandfather on my mom's side has a mixed rat terrier/jack russel, and she is very well behaved. She rarely barks, and is a very nice lap dog.

My grandmother on my dad's side has an overweight chihuahua. The dog definitely goes against the stereotype, since she is the sweetest dog I've ever encountered. Very spoiled, though.
They also had a boston terrier that passed away a few years ago. She had so much energy, but when you fished, she would stare intently at the end of the pole for an hour until the end bent, she she would bark like mad. A year or two before she died, she was attacked by the neighbor's dog; I think a doberman. Her health declined really quickly after that.

One time one of my dogs (E36 M3head, mother of Dusty and Bruzer) and my roommate's dog (Otto, father of Dusty, a Pitbull) dug under an electric fence and shredded two Dobermans in the neighbor's yard. The owner was home and rushed them to the vet who managed to save them. I was at sea at the time and the Pitbull got the blame, although I suspect E36 M3head instigated the whole event.

After having my thumb nearly torn apart by a schnauzer, when I was 10, I've never liked small dogs. Although I wouldn't mind having a REAL dog, being in my mid 20's and living like a nomad, it just doesn't make sense.

I grew up with terriers of various types.

I have medium sized herding dogs now.

I think most small dogs are horrid little annoyances mostly because their owners think they are so cute and let them get away with murder. It's just bad parenting is all. I get a good chuckle out of Cesar Millan putting his Patented Alpha Clutch on the necks of these spoiled little rats. Dog Whisperer FTW.

medium sized herding dogs are where its at, we have a australian shepard dog/collie mix, beautiful dog, pretty bright, does that stuff you see on tv where people make their dogs run courses. she loves playing frisbee, and is good around children. the only bad thing is she is very friendly, and will jump up at you to lick your face if you let her. she is smart enough however to not do this to children or babies.

We have had both Siberian Huskies and one very lovable Bichon Frise.

as stated in the article. the siberians make great watch dogs.. they will watch you come in, watch you take everything, and watch you leave.

The Bichon was one of the sweetest dogs I have ever encountered. Unlike many smaller breeds, she actually thought she was a large dog, and therefor did not have a need to be aggressive towards every dog or person that came near.

I think the Bichon is rated #1 for having with kids. Not only are they are friendly breed, but they do not shed and actually have hair, not fur, which makes them pretty much hypoallergenic

I'm of the general opinion that any dog small enough to be dropkicked should be, but I admit, my nephew's girlfriend's miniature Yorkie is a very nice dog by any standard.

I've known other Yorkies that were PsITA, though, so it's just this one as a good example I guess.

My golden retriever, Abby, that we had from 1991 until 2003 used to sit on the corner of my driveway and wait for me to get home from school every day when I was in elementary school. She'd sit in the same place, watch the bus go by, watch us walk home from the bus stop, and then greet us happily. I miss her.

We have a miniature pinsher (or however you spell it) and an australian shepherd.

The min pin runs around like he's on crack 24/7. He can be dead asleep and hear the slightest noise and freak out. He tends to be a little aggressive/protective but he's so small it's kind of funny. He's doesn't take real well to training either.

The aussie on the other hand, learns VERY fast and is overly friendly if anything. She's also pretty chill, which i'm a big fan of.
