Plot twist: make it three Miatas named Chrystyne, Krystine, and Crisstine.
If it's going to follow in the footsteps of the original, it can't be too popular or well known of a vehicle, but also not insanely obscure. At the time of the book (and to some extant the movie), a 57 Fury was just another old car, and not a popular one at that point. By the early eighties, it would have been far overshadowed by 55-57 Chevys and T-birds. Thus my earlier suggestions of some cars that had a lot of sales when they were new, but are mostly unloved now.

In the original movie, the '57 Plymouth was a car that was too old for most kids and was a complete junker. For the remake it should have similar qualities - a 1968 Plymouth has sort of an evil face to start with, and it keeps the remake in line with the original.

Got a die-cast version of "The Car" on my desk right now.
They made a sequel using a Chrysler 300 as the new "The Car". I watched it. I wanted my time back.

It would get the young owner ridiculed. People loathed them, yet they sold enough to really start the CUV movement beyond the CR-V/RAV4 cute Utes and lifted wagons. The brand is also now dead so you don't have to worry about them coming after you for a negative portrayal.
If you wanted to keep with a sedan, the Pontiac 6000 gets my vote. Forgotten vanilla that was never popular.

I think Stuart nailed it with the 68 mopar. Fits the storyline of just some old car, but has ... something... not just an appliance.

Unfortunately, if the movie made it "up" to a B movie or more, it would only make the stupid plan of tuning a diesel to intentionally run poorly, just to make a cloud of soot, more popular than it already is. We def. don't want to encourage anything as misunderstood as that!

Some of your early Malaise era cars look equally ominous and would be easier for a kid with no money to get his hands on. While a '77 Plymouth Fury seems to have been a bit less angry, how about a Dodge Magnum?

I completely agree that it is a horrible idea, and might help popularize some terrible trends, but think it would be a hit (I don't have a very high opinion of the average person right now).
I mean, think of it, The soundtrack could be Lyle Lovett, Garth Brooks, et al. The wimpy kid gets a cowboy hat, boots, and truck nutz. If you're going to ruin that movie by re-imagining it, I say go for it.
Oh, and yeah, I agree that a malaise era Magnum would be trueist to form for a serious reboot.

The one trouble with using any of the Malaise-era cars is just that. Malaise. They weren't bad to the bone. They were sort of not very good to the bone. The hood wouldn't slam on a line workers' hand, oh dear me no. It would slowy settle as the hinge struts failed and trap the workers' lunch bag or something. Maybe someone barks a shin on the bumper. It might *like* to be bad and evil but it just doesn't have the gumption. So all it does is have electrical bits fail randomly and strand the kid in inconvenient places and smell funny and make trim panels and interior bits fall off at embarrassing moments. So, just like real life. The FX budget is gonna be *eeeeeasy*
What about a model only sold in Canada
Something V8 with the nose and trim changed from the USA model
