I was going to suggest this Ed Zachary. Since we have a pretty trustworthy bunch of folks here, maybe adding a temp/permaban to posting from that IP or just total banhammer for that account/IP.

Other good measures:

  • A honeypot forum that is the only place a new member can post and he has to post there once before gaining access to any others (meaning had to read the instructions).
  • you can't post a link until you have 10 posts.
  • user based system that collapses/deletes on instance count, and suspends accounts based on unique count over the last x days.

Unfortunately we are seeing some of the negative results of our own success. One of the reasons we initially did our own message board software was to get that additional google juice for the host domain that wouldn't come with a third party board. Well, we got it, now we're dealing with the party crashers.

But thanks to everyone for their patience, and for helping out with the canoe patrol. Honestly, the BS is pretty easy to spot on this board. There have been very few that we all couldn't tell rather quickly were spam.
