This is why the only drug I ingest is lots and lots of caffeine. It's legal, and places of work often provide it for their own workers in the break room.
I worked at Home Depot for a while and there was a known pot consumer. He was always polite and worked hard, often extra hours since he made less than his last job (not fired for pot use, the company went belly up). Our supervisor was only concerned about it because he could be randomly drug tested (was in rehab once before) and we couldn't afford to lose someone who worked that hard. I don't think he ever showed up high, though, and I never smelled it on him. This doesn't help your story at all, it's just a similar one.

I don't really care what people do on their own time, as long as it doesn't affect me. I've never even tried weed, but the people that are out of college and still smoke it regularly are usually trashy losers that need to grow up.

Seems a wee bit harsh. Also seems like you are not considering prescription (or non-prescription ) legal drugs. I guess I fall under the "lowlife trashy piece of garbage" also since I came to work once on cold medicine... I felt a bit "loopy"..... many pixels lost there life that day for certain...

I consume alcohol, hence i am low life garbage.
I like the folks who show up to court smelling like they got a ride with Cheech and Chong. Apparently nothing wrong with smelling like it as long as you don't possess it. I'd say something like "don't come to work smelling like weed".
The times, they are a-changin'.

Weed is the LEAST of the smells you have to worry about at court.

While I have no issue whatsoever with recreational drug use, the idea of going to work under the influence of control substance is pretty dumb.
The difficult thing about it is that just like alcohol, different people show different tests results.
Lets say I had a really boozy night of last. My BAC is below the limits, but I still have it in my system. If my employer tested me, they'd probably wonder why I'm drinking before or at work, but in reality I just had a wild night.
The same could be said for THC. Maybe the last time she smoked up was a few days ago, but her unemployed roommate smokes up at 6am while she's getting ready for work.
The "smell" might be considerably worse than the test result, but you can't really determine if she's being doing it at work, right before work, or over the weekend.

If she came to work drunk, you'd have a problem with it.
What's the difference? If you have to audit her work to make you feel better, time to get a new book keeper, no matter why you feel the need to audit.
Just so I am clear here, what is the reason I will be providing her when I let her go?
"You smell funny"
"I have a bad feeling about you"
"You're fired but at least it is not because you were drunk so cheer up"
Just need to have my story straight for when I have to repeat it to her lawyer.

I'm in the 'I don't care what you do at home but be sober/clear headed here at work' crowd. I'd say something to her about it, consider it the first warning. Around here, first warning= verbal, second and third warning = written and typically third warning includes an escort out the door.
Another angle: if she gets injured on the job, is found to be high during a worker's comp investigation (yes, they do them down here) then the company (you) is in deep doo doo. For that matter, if she's holding on company property that is a big problem for the company as well. Just imagine the effect of a pot bust in your parking lot...
I'd tell her that she should use a mint and some visine if she doesn't want to share her stash with the boss. Otherwise... I've had my share of three martini lunches. If the work gets done and done well... meh. You could have a completely sober incompetent tool doing your books.

My lunch is a half-hour. If I had a single martini I'd probably best toast. Then again I'm a lightweight in a heavyweights body.

Is pot legal or is it "almost legal?" Do you really need to give her a reason?
Is it OK to come to work drunk?
I am not saying fire her, just ask her. If she came to work smelling like a brewery, would you say something?
It bothers you enough to ask here, why not just ask her?
I am old and it has been illegal most of my life. It is now legal to do pretty much anything except grow it without a liscence. Of course if you have a sore pinkie you can get a liscence to grow it, which is why there is a Vietnamese group growing it on an industrial scale on the acreage next door to me.
And I do not know what bothers me. The smell or the fact that she may be working while enjoying a mild buzz. And I suppose I asked because I am trying to organize my thoughts on a subject that has caused me to spend some time thinking about it. And I wanted a second opinion.

I have been there. This possibly stoned bookkeeper is not the one who caused me to be audited and reassessed $25,000.00. And that incompetent sack of E36 M3 was not stoned.
She was also extremely un hot, which may have been a red flag.

You need a reason? In FL you don't.....

If medical pot is legal there, and she has a card, that might change that. Kind of like someone getting hurt while on cold medicine. Of course if she is working heavy machinery (which of course she isn't) that would be different.

Sounds like a winner to me. If you already have measures in place (audits) that ensure her work is being performed properly, I'd think this should suffice.
