Good.
Thank you.
There was some strife because the flag pole was higher than allowed by the HOA, but he raised the flag every day at sunrise and lowered it at sunset. By the rules.
Can I say STFU?

HOAs suck. And you'd think most would be smart enough not to take on this particular battle. It's not just the flag, it's being flown by a certified war hero.
Oops.

Reminds me of a rather lengthy battle an owner of a nice s4 had with the HOA, long story short, they booted his car, he picked up the car with dollies and put his car in his garage, boots and all, hilarity ensued.
HOA's are a PITA! The one at my old house would always bust my nuts about not having my deck stained. But the jerk who was president had so much vegetation in the front of their house, you practically needed a machete to get to the front door. Never again will I live in a house with one of those.

A link to that episode was posted here and much (deserved) derision was aimed at the HOA.
In this case, the HOA apparently never checked on the owner's credentials, or worse, didn't care that he is a MOH recipient.
One hopes there is a purge of the HOA's board members, followed by a good old fashioned tarring and feathering.
Move to a state were every other person has a boat in their front yard and then maybe your thoughts on HOA's will change..
Jensenman knows what I'm talking about...
I vote we move ignorant into a HOA. Then we all get to sit around and make up rules for him to follow. They we'll tax him until he's bankrupt to build us a new pool and work shop that he can't use because he'll be too busy working to pay for it all. It'll be great.
I will never, ever live in a HOA again.
To play the devil's advocate, if someone moves into a neighborhood with an HOA, deed restrictions, etc and then complains when they run afoul of the rules they agreed to by purchasing a home there, why is that the HOA's fault?
Perhaps in this instance, the HOA came along after the owner had purchased his house, but the article doesn't make that clear.
Sorry iggy, I'm not HOA friendly. HOA's are the work of the nosy wannabe aristocrat with way too much time on their hands. For chrissakes, I had a customer who got a summons from her HOA for a 'rust leak' from her car, whatever that is.
I look at it this way: I have a shop in the back which had dead cars behind it (couldn't see them from the street and I moved them when I was good and ready) and I never heard a peep. A boat in a neighbor's yard is no big deal.
For a little more HOA type hilarity, check this out:

From the article:
'The Irvans and Ambrose are part of the Selkirk Property Owners Association. The association's covenants prohibit retail and commercial activities but allow generally accepted farming practices.'
The Irvans are trying to use the POA rules to shut down their neighbor's operation.
I never will understand signing something that lets other people tell you what you can and can't do with your own property.
Yep. Stand up for your God given right to sacrifice goats in the backyard.

HOA's seem to breed nosy busybodies. If I want to leave my garage open for a few hours, I'm going to. I don't need Mrs. Fumfersmegma across the street calling the HOA and ratting me out.
The snitch mentality of an HOA is something I'd have no desire to deal with.

I'm not HOA friendly.... but after going through some neighborhoods down there, I understand why they exist.
That's all I'm trying to say..

Dear Dr. Hess...
I lived in one.. They were idiots. However, It was a good selling point that helped me sell my house in a time when noone was buying.
I won't do it again, but I know why they exist...

Kept my property losses to only $10k when I went to sell in a horrible down turn. House was on the market for less than a month in In spring 09...
That said.. Those people were idiots.... Idiots..
I cant legaly park on my driveway because it is gravel. That is a county law, funny thing is the county has some parking lots that are gravel. I dont and wont live in a covenant "protected" development. If anyone shows up to ticket me for parking on the gravel I will politely tell them to shove their ticket up their ass. I live 1/4 mile from the road, in the middle of heavy virgin forest. Anyone that can see me or my house is tresspassing and subject to full prossecution for same. "get off'n my propurty city boy"

What I REALLY can't understand is bitching endlessly about it after the fact.

Don't you live where it's a legal requirement to own a firearm?
Post the signs, carry a piece and keep the peace.
the boat thing is hilarious. I grew near the sea and along the inland waterway. Boats in your driveway all winter were a way of life.
and yes. HOAs suck. While where i live could use some serious beautification.. I would never advocate forcing it on anybody
Iggy, the basic idea of a HOA is good. But when they've degraded into nothing more than a way for people to control other people in a neighborhood, that's when I take a problem to it. As often happens, these people don't really want to keep the neighborhood nice. They want superiority over their neighbors. It gives them the moral high ground to make themselves feel better.
That said, berkeley HOA.
Not all HOA are evil, the one that governed the condo I stayed at in San Diego had tons of rules but lax enforcement. The place was made in the 70s though and had a lot of originals owner so it might have been different. I wouldn't want to live in the gestapo style ones with people ratting on each other though.

the goal of an HOA is usually to keep people from being inconsiderate. Making 100ft high flagpoles, 20' high fences, painting their house an obscene color, filling every inch of their lawn with junk. That kind of thing.
Unfortunately they usually allow people to be over considerate of everyone else.
My in laws live in a townhouse with an HOA run by the stereotypical HOA busybodies. They pay $125 a month, and that basically gets them access to a nice pool. They are responsible for all exterior maintenance- in fact, on a quarterly basis, a feature in the HOA newsletter is a list of all the units that the HOA determined will need to re paint/re stain in the near future or face fines. One time they left mistakenly left their garbage can out overnight after collection day- sure enough, a few weeks later, they got a letter in the mail reminding them of the policy re: garbage cans.
One of the selling points of their neighborhood was that it is directly across the street from a commuter rail station. Shortly after they moved in, the HOA floated an idea to pay an off duty police officer to come a few days a week and hand out tickets to any resident crossing over the HOA's split rail perimeter fence to get to the train station. Their claim was that by crossing over the fence, residents were "trespassing" across 20 feet or so of HOA owned land outside the perimeter fence to get to the street. That went over real well- apparently at the next HOA election, EVERY board member was replaced.
OTOH, as others have pointed out, they do have their place. My wife and I looked at a house for sale in a newer neighborhood with no HOA recently, and there seemed to be a neighborhood wide contest to park the crappiest looking old camping trailer or RV in front of your house. The house we were looking at was 1 of 3 on a cul de sac. Of the other two, one had a boat on a trailer half in the front yard blocking half of the sidewalk, and the other had a two car driveway occupied by a utility trailer and a car on blocks.
