Snail Mayhem

Perhaps moving at a snail's pace would have been helpful for a driver in Germany who totaled his car after it slid on snail slime. According to the Associated Press, the unidentified driver was driving on a highway in his East German Trabant when his car lost traction while passing over slime left by a procession of snails. >> Read more trending stories German police said the driver lost control and the car flipped, totaling the vehicle but leaving the driver unharmed. The accident happened on Wednesday morning, police said in a news release. Some snails were killed in the crash, but others managed to safely make it to the grass embankment on the other side of the highway, authorities said. The sun eventually dried out the leftover slime. The incident happened in Paderborn, over 200 miles west of Berlin. © 2016 Cox Media Group

Here I thought this was about some sort of turbo carnage. Instead it is surprisingly literal.

This article really needs photos of the scene... I want to know if this was a mindbogglingly huge number of snails, or a small number of mindbogglingly huge snails.

It was a Trabant. Except for being blackout drunk, the only possible way to lose control of it would be slug slime on the road surface.

I'm calling bullE36 M3, I've driven over huge amounts of snail slime and snails themselves (exploring an abandoned road that turned out to some kind of snail-hive), there was no meaningful loss of traction. I was on mud tires though.

First thing that came to my mind were the Giant African Snails that you have to watch out for in south Florida. Not only do they eat your stucco but they'll bust a tire if you hit one. Plus you can smear them all over the road.

I'm more surprised you can get a Trabrant going fast enough to lose control.

"I just kind of suck at driving," said no statement ever found in an accident report.
