A better example of why ALL government handouts should just be immediately killed cannot be found.

She's 100% in the letter and intent of that program as well. "No Income".

I remember a study a while back that said it you distribute all the money evenly it will with few exceptions be distributed back to the way it was before within a few years.

That is one way to get out of a welfare fraud conviction.

I have a friend who's broke as all hell, he got a job in construction and one of the first things he did was take up cigarettes He's off of them now, but not by choice...

Apologies in advance for the flounder/hijack, but is the Lottery not one of the the most detestable blights on society ever? Preying on the near-universal human weakness of wanting something for nothing, when the Mob runs one it's a crime known as the "numbers racket" but when the government decides to take advantage of its citizens, it's just good, clean fun?

Yeah it's pretty bad, but it doesn't really stand out among the other nasty blights.

I don't think it's a flounder - the lottery is a game of chance run by the state (or states in some cases where they need bigger numbers). Before PA had casinos - it was the ONLY legal gambling allowed. A monopoly as it were. I had an acquaintance get into serious trouble for using his accounting degree to grow a small business where workin' folks like myself could wager on football. Turns out the state does not cotton to competitors for the money of fools.

I think the lottery is a wonderful thing. It's a voluntary tax.

It's not a blight at all. It's a voluntary tax paid only by people who are bad at math. That's a win-win as far as I'm concerned.

Except of course our taxes were paying this woman's public assistance while she was blowing her wad.

Hey now, I have this piece of paper that says I'm pretty good at Math--it says Bachelor of Science in Mathematics--and I play the lottery. Do I expect to win? No, but I'll go ahead and buy that scratch off ticket when my girlfriend is taking for evvv err in the grocery store. It is entertainment.

FYI, I do 100% agree with you that it is a voluntary tax (mostly on the poor/those who don't understand statistics/probability), but don't forget that there is also an entertainment thing there.

I'll also buy a MegaMillionPowerBallWhatever when it gets really really high. Like, high enough to really screw up my life.

That's a welfare reform issue, NOT a lottery issue.

I've followed in the steps of my father with buying powerball/mega millions tickets. I used to tease him about it all the time when I was a kid, until I understood.

You don't really think you're gonna win, but it gives those daydreams just that a slightly higher possibility of coming true.

And as long as you're not going overboard, it's only a couple bucks a week. Don't drink a fancy coffee or skip one fast food meal, and there's your shot at the extremely small chance of becoming a millionaire.

Why not?

The stories that result when people win the lottery are pretty interesting. Not uncommon for them to go right back to where they were, end up dead etc, some pretty crazy stuff.

It is interesting that people really have to "learn" to be wealthy, and it's generally pretty bad when they don't.

Man, I've been daydreaming about it so long I have several different contingency plans mapped out depending on how much money I win. Of course, I almost never buy a ticket, so it's all daydreaming. But if I did, I don't think it would get used on hookers and blow.
