So I bought myself an awesome 6 gallon Cajun Fryer for my frying needs.  I love it.

I need to filter my oil - I've strained it a couple of times, but I'd like to do a better job.

The drain has a 1" fitting - would adapting a spin on oil filter be a terrible idea?   I mean, its just paper filter media and some rubber gaskets - right?

I just dump mine through a coffee filter in a funnel.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to assume that the components in an automotive oil filter are made with food-grade materials.  The rubber and adhesives could easily have nasty stuff in them, and there might be residuals of various prep/cleaning chemicals in there that are toxic as well.

There are food grade rated filters for equpment that is used in food production. They are not cheap. You could likely dump you oil 2-3 times for the price of 1 filter.

I just run mine through cheese cloth back into the jug. Run until the oil is dark, usually 2-3 times.

Add me as another vote for using large, food grade coffee filters and a funnel.

Given the smells I often get from a new oil filter, I'm guessing that it is about as far from food-grade as you can get.

What about maybe a filter with a replaceable element, like an older BMW or MB?  You could disassemble the canister and wash components first.  That won't stop the oil from washing nasty stuff out of some rubber, but you could at least get the surface stuff off.

On a related note, we just finished The SpongeBob Musical at our theater.

Who is the target audience for a spongebob musical? I'm seriously interested in who showed up.

Strangely now I kind of want to go to see a Spongebob musical.
