Hi
this is a 10 part BBC radio story on the Spitfire WW2 airplane and what it took to build it ,
they are 15-20 minutes each .
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w13xtv79/episodes/downloads
the first episode is at the bottom of the page ,
Shows you what can happen when you need to get some planes built !
My kind of listening.
Thought experiment (maybe dealt with in this series?): Although a beautiful and effective aircraft, it was also quite difficult and expensive to build (part of why it looks so good). Would it have been more effective (at least early in the war) to just concentrate on Hurricane production?
Of note of course is the Spitfire is going to be a better match to a 109, but what if you had 25% more aircraft in the form of Hurricanes?
Later Spitfires of course went pretty crazy performance wise. The always however suffered from a short range, so in overall effectiveness (compared to US fighters for example) they suffered.
NOTE: Episodes do not have any episode order when you download them. Best to add an episode number (near the beginning) to the files.
Thanks. I downloaded the podcast and will start listening to it during this evenings commute
