So a guy local to me has 2 of the 6ft by 4ft Kobalt locking storage cabinets from Lowes and a decent looking Kobalt workbench for sale..

These cabinets and this work bench.  He's asking $500 for all three (Firm! I know what i have!).

I only have a 1 car garage which needs desperate organization. I was thinking of redoing it this summer and maybe getting some cabinets like these.  Seems like a good deal but the reviews online appear to be hit or miss. Some people say the steel bends/dents easily and the legs bend easily if you ever try to move it.  If they were on wheels it would be way more awesome.

I can go either way on the work bench. Looks nice but appears to have little storage space and the one review on Lowes says it is way overpriced.

Anyone have these Kobalt cabinets who can chime in?

Or should I just keep looking on Craigslist for cheap cabinets when warehouse's go out of business or people demo their kitchens.

I was unimpressed with the quality of the Kobalt tool cabinets when looking at them in the store. I'd check them out in person or at the store to see how they feel and look to you. Finding used steel office or industrial storage cabinets can save you a bunch of money but they're hard to find sometimes and often quite abused. That said, I've seen a few nice big heavy ones at the local university's surplus sales for super cheap. If you've got a big university near you see if they run surplus sales.

I've had mixed thoughts on some of those types of cabinets. They are typically flat-packed and you have to assemble them yourself. As such, the quality of the display examples in the stores can vary a lot depending on how much care was taken during assembly.  Just because the store models look a bit wonky, doesn't mean the cabinet is inherently wonky.  You need to inspect it closely and determine if what bugs you is due to poor design/materials or due to poor assembly.

I have a similar bench from H-F and it's pretty solid in my house as my bicycle work bench.  My garage cabinets are a mix of 50's era steel wall cabinets and a couple of Gladiator units. As the latter come pre-assembled, they are rock-solid.  I picked them up very cheap from Lowes from the display clearance.  The only thing wrong with them is no keys were included.
