Kinda both.

He likes to groom me so he spends most his out-of-cage time there.

I still don't understand what they do. My ferrets were hilarious, my cats are awesome... Does a sugar glider just sorta hang out?
He hangs out. He is a social animal so he wants to me around me, the cats, and the dog. He is like a cat in that he wants to play, stand on you, jump on you, run around, and cuddle. He is like a dog in that he wants to do tricks and chase cats. When my wife and I play with him, we have him fly between us across the living room. Just don't get between him and sweet food.

Yeah, minus the pooping on the head part, very cool. Is he potty trained in any way???
I'll stick with my cats...

I plan on potty training him. He gets easier to handle every day for me. He is still getting used to life in my house.

Um, you have a cat too? How's that work out? I think my cat would've murdered me already if our size ratio was reversed.
In reply to Matt B:
I thought that's how my cats would act. Oddly they are interested, but don't want to mess with him. My more timid cat seems to like him. My more aggressive cat has been running away when he walks towards him. Since gliders aren't rodents, the cats apparently don't see them as food.

Wow really? What's his glide ratio like?
In reply to N Sperlo: Interesting, I had no idea they would be that discerning when it came to small furry things. Of course, individual cats are about as different as individual people so I'm sure there are some that would be down for some good ol'fashioned non-rodent murdering. That said, sounds like you have a good inter-species family unit going there.
Glide ratio is like a flying squirrel. There really isn't a whole lot of glide, but they have a helluva jump.
I was very careful around my cats because claws, but I still don't let them hang out together without a barrier yet. They need to spend lots of time getting to know each other. I'm sure there have been incidents between felines and gliders, but they are much less common than you'd expect.
interesting. we considered some of these as pets but after adopting some ferrets for a year or so, I would think sugar gliders would require just as much attention. doesnt exactly work with our schedule to well. not exactly fair for the pet.
I suppose they might poop less than ferrets, I felt like I was constantly cleaning up poop.
