Stupid $@%$#% search function! I know we've talked straight razors a bunch. Help me find the thread? I'm tired of buying cartridges and getting a E36 M3ty shave.

About two months back I bought a single edge safety razor at an antique store for $8. I think its around a 1940 GEMCO. After rounding up the necessary supplies I've been happily shaving with it since then. I've finally developed a technique that gives me a really close shave without feeling like I wrestled a badger.
Single edge blades are not nearly as easy to find as the doubles right now. The ones available locally are fair quality, but good enough. I get 10 blades for $5 at CVS, and each blade lasts for 4 shaves. I might be able to get a week on a blade, but I'd rather not. For preshave oil I use Kroger's Light Bath Oil (sesame oil basically) at $6 for a bottle that's probably a year's supply. I bought a Hagen mug/soap/brush set at Walgreens for $34 or so, and it rocks. The replacement soap is $5 and I'd guess from use so far it will last at least 2 months, maybe 3. Aftershave cream is a name brand from Kroger that I can't remember (Neutrogena maybe?) and it was $6, probably a 2 month supply. I actually tried some of the Art of Shaving stuff, super expensive, and I looked like I'd been in a cat fight. It was awful.
So, setup costs (razor, cup, mug): $37
Recurring costs (blade, soap, oil) per shave: apprx 32.7 cents
Recurring costs on my Gillette Sensor excel using cheap crap shaving cream and a new cartridge each week was lower, around 15 cents per shave for a much worse shave.
I could lower that a little by buying the blades in bulk, but local availability is a plus.
I'm getting a much better shave, and there's something cool about starting my day shaving with a razor that's over 70 years old. Plus I'll never have to buy scraper blades for the shop ever again.
I think you're talking about safety razors, right? There's been a few. Try putting this site:grassrootsmotorsports.com shave in the google search window.
My father shaved with a straight razor. Never cut himself. As far as I know.
Used to watch him sharpen it on the leather strap.
I used a straight razor for a while - it worked, but not appreciably better than a crappy Mach 3 disposable - even when I had the barber do it. The worst part was the time, it took like 30-45 minutes. I can't handle that. I stuck with the brush and soap, though, cheaper and it smells nicer and you can buy it locally. I wanted to try the safety razor, but was unimpressed enough with the straight that I'll probably skip it.
I have one. You can buy them at beauty store supply places along with a 100 pack of blades for less than $20.
I use mine for scraping stuff (like stickers off glass) because shaving with one is a pain in the ass and I've still got about 92 blades left :)

I'll buy them. How much?

Thanks! That's the thread!
Yes, DE is what I meant. I bought a Feather handle and a pack of Feather DE's from Amazon.
I use a DE safety razor, a lot easier than a straight blade and blades are only $0.50 a piece for top of the line.
