Saw a Mercedes SUV/Crossover thing today get cut off in traffic. The MB driver was po'd and immediately floored it to pass the offending driver. As they passed me the MB started crackling and popping which surprised me. It sounded just like a car doing a burnout at a dragstrip bouncing off the rev limiter. Are such things standard issue on some cars or might this have been a "Kompressor" version with a rev limiter added due to the supercharging...?

I was looking on youtube, most of the vids I saw were v8s but there was a 6 that was making crackly noises too so I guess it's just a thing they do?
Don't all efi cars have rev limiters ? I know all of mine did.
Except they didn't make noises, just stopped running.

All EFI cars do have limiters far as I know.
A few of mine will make noises.
I think that is a "sound effect" they add to the cars to make them sound "racey". Some of the higher end cars certainly do that, I don't think there is any actual reason why they would backfire (not like it has an anti-lag system on it or anything).
I would find it hard to believe it was a rev limiter because is extremely unlikely, almost impossible, (Merc SUV) it was a manual, and I can't imagine the drivetrain program would allow it to get into the limiter.
There was a BMW that I saw driving around the other day that clearly had some mod done to it. I would make crazy backfires on any deceleration. Yes it was obnoxious (think open pipe Harley), and yes, I am sure he thought he was the coolest guy around. That might be a new thing (sigh).

Sheee-ooot! My 1973 Mazda RX-2 with the Jatco 3-speed slushbox would do that anytime I'd romp on it in 2nd gear, then lift abruptly. BOOM! Man, that was crazy loud. How it didn't ever blow the dang muffler off is well beyond my comprehension. But it was 1980, I was like 20 years old, and I was the coolest guy around. LOL.
They call it a 'crackle' tune. VWs, Audi, Mitsu, all the bros have them. AMGs are generally a bro car around here.

Almost every vehicle I know of from the past 20 years has had a factory rev limiter.
Yeah I know somebody with a 335is with a tune and exhaust for it. She told me there was literally a setting for "burble" in the tuner and she of course turned it all the way up. Her car pops and crackles loud enough on decel that I was hearing it over 2 barely muffled small blocks on the way to a show one afternoon last summer.
I was going to mention I hate that people think you have to bounce an engine off of the rev limiter to make it sound cool. I always thought it made it should like they can't drive
Perhaps he was in “manual mode” and so road-ragey he forgot to shift?
Call me a “bro,” bro, but the pronounced pops and burbles from the borla on the V make me giggle every time...really from any big, nasty V8...actually some 4-cylinders too.
