Essential worker and I've got too much going on right now. I can tell you my opinion would not change if I was there. There is a lot of fear mongering and hiding. That is a fact. Is there also good health practices as well? Absolutely. They are not mutually exclusive unlike what we are led to believe.

Thank you for finally sharing your opinion on the subject. It was unclear where you stand on the issue. cheeky

Come to my town.  I have 3 friends that would like to meet you.  Maybe shake hands, lick your face.  Might even share their devices that are used to try to bring back lung capacity.

There's no reason to be a dick.

I could say the same. Have a nice day.

I read an article that said even though the city made it clear they didn't want them there, many participants basically said, "Go ahead and cancel it, we are still going to show up anyway."

And here I thought it was all us under-40s that were entitled.

...aaand we're back from personal insult land. Daytona will be hosting Biketoberfest in October, even though it's "cancelled." The last day of Bike Week was cancelled in March, too... and the crowds stayed and partied as per usual, with the same attitude.

As mentioned on the previous page, I wasn't being serious, just a little playful joking.

Really I've never understood the "People don't want us here so I'm going to piss them off and go there anyway."

That's a really bizarre kind of mindset to me.

I would think that going to a gathering of 250k+ people is inherently not taking Covid seriously. Not really sure how you can come to another conclusion, unless you've already been tested positive for antibodies and negative for the virus (swab) (or 14 days, to be safe, since the positive case).

Here's an attempt at dark humor, but if this offends - mods please feel free to delete:

For every 1,000 people who feel like the best way to re-open the economy is to go attend a huge gathering without practicing any social distancing - about 4 of them will demonstrate Darwinism for the rest of us! devil

That's why I said most people. Most people are not at that gathering.

if picking .00008% of the USA population to try and twist something to your favor makes you happy, you do you.

if anything, you have proved my point about internet experts.

We are talking about a gathering involving public alcohol use and the riding of motorcycles without helmets. Even without Covid this is a prime demonstration of Darwinism.

But this is a thread specifically about those 250k+ people. So I'm talking about it related to this specific event.

(But it has nothing to do with Covid and everything to do with the average Harley owner)

It's looking like some almost ideal conditions for this "experiment".  As noted, it's a bit warm there and they seem to be congregating inside (during the day at least).  As has been shown, proximity to the source, time of exposure, and airflow (lack of) seem to be the prime factors.  A crowd in a bar = maximized potential.  It will only take one with "a sniffle he got from the dust on the road" to potentially infect many.

The sad part of course (still of their own doing though) is that those who have the worst situation are those (locals) who work in those places.  They will not be traveling back to the areas with larger hospitals (with ICUs).  Amount of exposure also seems to increase severity.... it's a long drive to Sioux Falls or Denver.

To be fair, 2020 was officially canceled about 5 months ago,  and people still showed up.

Would I go? C-19 aside I would just once to see what it all is. If it ended up being nothing good, there are absolutely fantastic roads in the Black Hills that are totally worth riding.

When I was up in South Dakota the rangers told us to stay in the car when the Bison were around. One did some nice damage to the front fender and took out a couple of headlights on one car. I don't know what they told the bikers.

My cousin has about 100 head of cattle up in Oklahoma. His bulls have a habit of taking his pickup trucks head on during feeding time. Sometimes bull bars are more than decoration.

Many many moons ago we were in Yellowstone watching a young asian couple walking towards a bison with baby with their cameras out.... we left before the fun started. You just can't fix that type of stupid.

Actually, I started this thread as someone who saw going to Sturgis as a risky proposition and was more than a little surprised that it was going to happen. However I live outside of the USA borders and was interested in knowing if the general consensus inside the lower 48  was different.

Truth be told, from where I sit,  the US has been unique in its reaction to the whole pandemic thing.

When I was in college, my best friend worked during the summers in Yellowstone.  The stories he told about clueless tourists and wildlife would make your hair stand on end; one I remember was someone putting their toddler on the back of an elk for a photo, and my friend grabbed the kid just before the elk galloped off with him into the woods.  surprise

I suspect to the surprise of none, there is a confirmed case that was at Sturgis and spent 5 1/2 hours in a bar.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/08/19/sturgis-rally-health-department-covid-19-exposure-one-eyed-jacks-saloon/5605880002/

Let the experiment begin....  hopefully no one you know becomes a subject in the study...

I hear there may be a more transmissible strain out there, but less dangerous.

I find these numbers interesting. Mead county SD has a population of 28,332 (as of 2019). so 65 cases per 100k people means they have 18 new cases. Sorry, I'm not seeing the falling sky on that.

EDIT: sorry, math fail. 17.36 new cases.

EDIT Dos: neighboring county Lawrence has a population of 25k and a rate of 45/100, they are also a "red" county with 11 new cases. Butte county at 26/100k and a population of 10k means 3 (and thats rounding up). so the main county involved and 3 surrounding account for 31 total new cases. Using their math.
