We're in the market for an automatic 12 ga shotgun as an Xmas gift for my father in law. We're hoping to spend less than $500. Any suggestions? Thanks for any info

I know you used to be able to get a Saiga 12 for about $465, but that's the factory original one with a 5 rnd mag. They've gone crazy now and good luck finding one under $750. Semi-auto 12 gauge will be kinda hard to find in that price range I think.

Sub 500 is pump action territory.

Used Mossberg 935's are in that area. There was one locally for $400 with original box and paperwork.

I looked long and hard at the Mossy 935s. Good guns, priced right, as reliable as any auto - which is to say fairly if maintained. You can get them new for not much over $500, or you could last year. I really like the way Mossbergs in general point and shoulder. I ended up with a nice Mossberg 500 pump 12 field & deer combo from a pawn shop for $200. If I hadn't stumbled on it the 935 would have been my choice.

The only other way to get a good 12ga auto is to watch the local used gun market like a hawk. I've seen some Remingtons pop up in that price range, but you'd better be the first guy to dial the number.

I think the Weatherby SA-08 is right in that price range. I bought my Beretta 390 from walmart for that about 15 years ago. I think the Stoeger is in that range as well and uses the Benelli innerds and made in Turkey.

In reply to cdowd:

I just checked on Cabelas and they have the Weratherby for $489.99

It looks like a pretty nice gun.
