We get snowy owls often this time of year.   There was one perched on a downtown building the other day.

How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

They like airports. They perch on the runway lights and hunt for critters crossing the bare pavement.

I've had a breeding pair of Barred Owls around the house for as long as I can remember. They make very distinctive calls back and forth to each other, which can be rather startling when they erupt unexpectedly from a tree right above your head. I'm rather surprised we have any squirrels and chipmunks at all these days.

Yeah, we had one in the woods behind our house for a few years.  Would make very loud & odd sounding calls in the middle of the night.  SWMBO got a glimpse of it once and that is how we figured out it was a Barred Owl.  I guess it found a mate and moved in somewhere else...

An Indian (Cherokee) friend of mine told me that seeing an owl was considered bad luck and meant that someone was going to die.  He worked for one of his relatives doing some kind of construction work with his cousins.  One day, a car had hit an owl and it was laying in the road in front of his relative's house.  All his cousins saw the owl and left, refusing to work.  Bad luck, someone was going to die.  Some time later, his relative's German Shepard got killed.  The cousins came back and said "See?"
