My wife and I will be working the Lemons race at MSR Houston. There is no good flight out on Sunday night, so we decided I'd take a day off work and fly home Monday night. Therefore we'll have all day Monday to ourselves and wanted to check out Galveston. We've never been to the area before. What's the weather normally like in early Nov? What should we do? We are very "touristy" people...we don't need the hidden gem nobody knows about, we want to see the fun sights. We also aren't sophisticated palates, so we're just looking for a good burger and fry joint or something like it.

If you like staring at oil rigs go to the beach. They do have one that you can tour it's a museum

that's all I can remember in Galveston because I was very young when we visited Galveston
WW2 Submarine and Destroyer tours at Seawolf Park, the carnival pier (opens at 4, so maybe not), the beach.
We had fun just walking around the old downtown and the shops, there are some cool ones, like the old marine salvage place.

Piggybacking off of this, you have described well our ideal visit. Beaches nice to visit?
We have been invited to go there in mid-Feb in lieu of our plan to go to Florida. Is it beachy then?
They have an old sailing ship, The Elissa. Plus a maritime museum. Museum is free. Ship has a modest entry fee.
A few good restaurants near The Elissa.
Two blocks away is The Strand. Kind of a mini, cleaner Bourbon Street. Shops, bars, restaurants.
There is a beach but if you go on it you need to have a way to shed the sand before you get into your vehicle.
If you park by the ship, and eat in a restaurant, they will validate your parking (but only for two hours.)
If anything is happening on the island that weekend I-45 will be a slow moving parking lot. The worst is when the Harley guys have a gathering on Galveston.
February is not a month to spend beach time on Galveston.

Poop. Beach time is the only thing I want to do in the middle of a Michigan winter. Thanks for the tips
Admittedly been awhile but my recollection of Galveston from a decade ago are;
in the winter there are not many tourists, it is pretty slow.
The ocean star right is a neat museum to learn a little about off shore drilling.
There is an aviation museum that was pretty cool. That was pre hurricane and I know it got messed up, don't know if it got fixed.
You can drive down the strip and when you get to the south side of the island you can drive right out to the beach.
I never had a notable meal in Galveston but I am sure they are there. I always always always recommend Lulling City Market in Houston (610 loop near the Galleria) I promise it will not disappoint with food or atmosphere.
