There are many ways to do audio time stretching. One is to create little snippets of a sound of various lengths and play them back overlapped while doing a kind of "two (times some degree of randomness) steps forward, one (times some degree of randomness) step back" progression. The result is that the sound can be stretched in time without changing the pitch.

In response to Evan B: Two years ago I rented a Nissan something small 4 door, with a CVT trans. The shift lever had a "non-overdrive" button on it. Odd, I thought. Driving it, though, when I pressed it, it got the engine way up on it's power band in the "let's-go-now" mode. Maybe the paddle shift will be a more cenvenient way to do that---and the cynic in me says marketing ploy. But, I was quite satisfied with the trans on that Nissan. It worked really well in the upper AZ desert, to the Grand Canyon and back to Phoenix. The underboosted steering and arm positions made me feel like I'd been lifting weights all day. Another reason to rent a car you're thinking of buying....

I worked for Mitsu when they were developing that. It "holds the gear" a bit, however, if you leave it in first, you can get up to top speed while at redline the whole time you are accelerating. It was fun cruising down the highway and dropping down to "1st" at 80 mph. It could chirp the tires when shifting to "2nd" though.
