Looks like more than one Tesla was delivered with a missing steering wheel nut, so that the wheel was just sitting on the splines. Make sure your wheel won't pop off with a good tug:

Tesla drivers consider the steering wheel to be nothing more than a vestige of the past.
Edit: Edited for grammar.
Isn't the self-driving feature tied to having a hand on the wheel? I believe they "cheat" by securing their hand to the wheel (and then nap etc).
Having a nice nap while winding down the canyon roads...
- you twitch in your slumber
- steering wheel comes off
- auto drive turns off...
MIL "Did you figure out what's wrong with my car"
Me "Yes, there's a loose nut behind the wheel".

Lol gave mine a rub and a tug...
It's good advice to have a properly attached steering wheel no matter what kind of car you drive.

Especially if it's a quick detach! I have heard stories of someone having the wheel come off while doing a hill climb!

I had mine come off while I was leading a group of students in a lead, follow session. I got the car stopped as it drifted off the left hand side of the track. I could see the whole train of students following me off the track.

If you are really into the self driving thing and prefer to take a nap while doing it, being able to remove and cuddle up with the steering wheel seems like a nice feature!
Or just imagine-- set the car to drive to school and pick up your kids, you stay at work with one hand on the wheel...
