I bought a used AiM Solo 2 DL and it arrived with a dead battery and cabling that is not compatible with my car. I will be buying an OBD 2 cable for it, but I'd like to test the thing before I do that. It has two ports on the bottom: a 5-pin and an 8-pin binder 712(?). I have a power supply that can put out up to 30 volts, and I want to apply voltage to this thing to see if it'll take a charge, wake up, and work.

Here's a diagram from AiM about what does what on that 8-pin port.

1 CAN ECU+
2 CAN ECU-
3 +Vb ext
4 ECU RS232TX
5 ECU RS232RX
6 K-Line
7 GND
8 RPM

I know some of these ports operate at lower voltages. Does anybody know which port the unit draws 12 volts from to charge the battery? The simplest diagram I found in their documentation suggests that I could get RPM and external power with pins 3 (+Vb ext), 7 (GND) and 8 (RPM). This suggests pin 3 is the 12V pin? (I'm guessing here that +Vb means Positive Voltage from_the_Battery.)

That's right, it should power up with 12V positive to pin 3 and negative to pin 7.

Cool. Thanks! I had the most hilarious and useless conversation with ChatGPT about this. It became apparent that it was just guessing, so I gave up and came here. (Usually that thing has a lot of good advice, but I usually come to the conversation armed with enough information to know when it's just making E36 M3 up.)

For the benefit of anybody reading this in the future, this worked. 12 Volt positive should go to Pin 3, +Vb ext. Ground should go to Pin 7, GND. You count clockwise around the connector when looking at the device, NOT the cable. The unit should boot (if configured to do so), report close to whatever voltage you've got applied to it, and the battery should show that it's charging.
