I listened to the cars of Hollywood podcast and what do I do? Rent the first season of Miami Vice. Only watched the pilot so far, but you guys are right: someone did their homework with the cars in that show.

Although it looks really dated these days, the show holds up pretty well compared to other tv of that era. It was pretty obvious that their budget increased for season 2, as night scenes (which are more complex to light) and time out of the (well-lit, easily controlled) station house increased dramatically.
All I remember is a chase scene where the Testarossa cannot outrun a white Astro cargo van through the streets of Miami. That was when it jumped the shark for me.
The night scenes were one of the reasons the Testarossa was white...also, there was a Testarossa body (ish) fitted to a Pantera for some of the scenes as well. A real black Testarossa was supposed to be used (and made a debut in an earlier episode, but they went with white.
IMHO, it was pure 80's vehicular goodness. AMG's, Quattroporte's, Countach's, Aston Martin's, vintage American etc. One of my favorite 80's shows.
I've now watched the first three episodes since hearing the Podcast.
One car you forgot that was made iconic by a movie, and also had it's own model made of it was obviously the Delorean thanks to Back to the Future.
