So I wake up this morning and gee it feels kinda chilly in the house. 'stat is dead. Replace blown 3A control circuit fuse in AHU and power up. Stat flashes "E2" and promptly goes dead again. So, what do I need to check?

System is only about 4 years old. Lennox heat pump. Fortunately I have another system on the other end of the house, so it's not really an emergency. The wife will be more amenable to snuggling. Downside is she won't be showing any skin.

I googled "Lennox heat pump E2 warning" and got this:

http://www.aitons.com/Ductless/vmh_sc_09_24_service_manual_03_28_12.pdf

Go to page 36 or so, it says Zero-crossing-signal-error. (no idea what that means)

Times like this I'm glad I got a cheap house with wall heaters... It's 5*'s right now where I am... Five!

I think Bruce Springsteen had a song about that. But for the record check the capacitor on the heat pump. If it is kind of bulging top and bottom it is fried. Ours has gone a couple times and it is easy and cheap to replace.

It's time like this I'm glad I moved to GA. 64*. Going around is shorts and a tee shirt.

My furnace died a few years back and I didn't notice until mid December. Hooray for 2nd floor condos!

I had to replace the control board and an igniter. Definitely DIYable if you don't mind the whole natural gas hazard.

My Burnham boiler has been great. Water heaters on the other hand seem to die if you look at them wrong.

I can do fine without heat. It was 80 something here yesterday.

Doing Thanksgiving with a house full of people and no water was tougher. The well tank ruptured, and I spent my T-day playing plumber and threading galvanized pipe.

Oh well. Still managed some turkey.

Just be glad you have the skills to fix it. Think of the average Joe calling Joe the plumber on Y-day.

Hmmm. Not nearly as many HVAC master techs on here as I had hoped.

Got through the night in good shape by switching the stat to Emergency Heat. System works as normal. Guess that means it's something in the control circuit on the outdoor unit.

I think that means your electric bill will be high, since I believe EM heat = electronic heat strips (resistance heat) rather than heat pump.

Use with care.

Yes, that is true, but a warm wife is well worth a few bucks.

After a bit of checking, and a bit of looking, I found nothing amiss. Armed with spare fuses, I ran the system first on cooling, then off, then on heating. Everything works as it should. No error reported by thermostat. Gotta love those intermittent faults! Grrr! I'm sure the next time it fails will be Christmas!
