Several years ago a buddy that runs dirt track parked his car one season. He was getting a bit burnt out and needed a break. He told me "I took all the money I'd normally spend on racing and spent it on my house. My house is really nice now!"
Pretty sure I am getting close to 6 figures when all is said and done over the past 7 years... that is including the current rallycar purchase, but still :o
I learned very early on not to do this. After a year of working on it, I'd put about 4,500 into a 2000 dollar Triumph TR-7... Never again...
I'm only 30-40k in the hole if I figure in the money I've made back, but not counting other (non-vehicle) things that I have accumulated in the process. Not sure if I am upset, or not.
Time is what I miss. I've not sunk a lot into cars and been unable to get it back. E36 M3ty cars aren't that expensive to play with.
One of the biggest costs has been the time-value of money just sitting in my driveway/garage instead of invested in appreciating assets.
Good point - time is another resource I've burned a lot of with junkers. I doubt I'd be out making more money if I wasn't working on the cars/bikes so much, but I would be out having fun in a running car/bike if I wasn't working on it so much.
