Odd then, how you can cancel a trademark if it never existed, right?

You can, however, change the definition of obscene and then apply the new definition to things you don't particularly like that already had been accepted.

One of my good buddies grew up on an Indian Reservation in Southern Oregon. During his time at the local High School they wanted to rename the football team. He thought they needed something that would strike fear into all the other teams in their district so he suggested both the Chiloquin White People, and the Chiloquin Free Blankets. Much to his dismay, neither were chosen.

Is RedskinAs okay?
What if one uses it to refer to another? Such as, "my redskinA"

Uh, no. Sorry, but I'll say whatever I want, whenever I want, including stuff that is offensive. Just because YOU (general you, but since you said it, you are included in the general) don't like a viewpoint/idea/saying/whatever, doesn't mean I have to give two E36 M3s, one E36 M3s, or even a partial E36 M3. That's how the real world works. I am saying this as nicely as possible

So you don't feel that being part of a society suggests that perhaps while you have free will there are certain things that are and aren't appropriate?

You would think it was fine to go to say an elementary school and call the children a bunch of Bob Costas. Ya know cuz you don't care?

Yes, and the funny thing is being an immigrant and not having grown up here, I had no idea as that beaners was a word, term, slur at all. When they started cropping up the name made sense to me as a derivative of bean. I must admit to doing an eye roll when it was changed.

tuna55 wrote: Dude, I get your viewpoint, and I understand that you're fairly left leaning and all. No problems.

Funny, if asked to define myself I say:
When looked at from a first world democratic country point of view I’m centrist to right leaning with strong libertarian views on social issues.
That means that from a U.S. point of view I’m considered some far left freak job
I still have a 100% conservative voting history in the UK and a 95% Liberal voting history over here.

tuna55 wrote: I do not believe, however, that you truly think that the government did not force them to change their name. You've proven yourself to not be a total idiot in the past. If they can't earn money on the trademark, what good is the name?

I actually 100% honestly believe this is the government saying that this is offensive and we won’t help you defend it, not the government saying change it. I also believe that there is a chance that this same decision could have come if we had a Republican President, note President not Congress. In fact it did. The Trademarks were previously rescinded in 1992 under a Republican President (I said 1997 yesterday, but I went and checked) later to be reinstated over a technicality. Further, IT DOES NOT RESIND PROTECTION FOR THE CURRENT LOGO. That’s right the current logo is not affected by this ruling and so the team can continue to make it’s shirts and sell them with protection. It applies to the trademarks filed between 1967 and 1990.

So, let’s sum it up. This has happened before under a Republican administration and the team didn’t go bust or get forced to change its name. Secondly this does not affect the current logo so they can continue to protect that. Tell me again how this is the evil big government forcing a team to change its name?

Stop looking for conspiracies under every rock. It is what it is. Nothing to see here, move on, move on.

P.S. I’m pretty sure at some point on here I have proven myself to be a total idiot

(Surprised the thread has gone four pages before anyone posted that.)

And since this was back in the era of segregated baseball, there was a Negro League counterpart, with one of the strangest baseball team names ever:

you're the immigrant … I've lived in this country for more than 65 yrs. I've not only never heard of "beaners", but I have no idea who is being slured, or what it means … I also thought it referred to coffee beans

I've never heard of it either until today.

I guess my old coffee shop was a truly offensive and distasteful place- it was called "The Brown Bean"

That should get just about everyone with thin skin pissed off.

Regarding use of offensive words such as calling school children names:

Nope, it's not fine. There are consequences to your actions and while you can do such a thing (freedom of speach means the government can't tell you not to do such a thing) you still have to live with the repurcussions of what you say. In that case it could range from a public shaming by your peers to a beating by a parent who doesn't care for your choice of words.

Exactly, it's about time the government stopped imposing rules and regulations on how people are using the Redskins name. Thank goodness for this new step in reducing the size and intervention of government.

HAHAHA what is funny is that some are complaining on here about the government "DOING" something when all they are saying is that the government will REMOVE its rules and regulations regarding the trademark!

As my Social Studies teacher said one day:

Anyone that ever attended or sent family to a public school in the USA has been a part of the largest socialist and communist organization in the world. Government controlled, funded and provided to all.

Washington DC area football team could have nipped this in the bud if they reached out to find a compromise to the adjust the image and name of the team. And probably gained more fans in the process. Just bad business management by the team. Marketing potential squandered.
