And He will be handing me a nice little refund this year. My planning last year worked!!!! I hate writing a check to "the man" every year. Decided to fix that for 2013.
Tax's are done for 2013!!!!!!

Nice (insert all the "Why did you give the gov't an interest free loan?" whiners)
The wife and I refinanced the house from just my name into both of our names, and filed jointly for the first time. Instead of a $2k refund, I'm paying in $1500.

+an extra 9.2k
this is always my slow part of the year (I worked 12 hours last week and have 8 scheduled next)So I do not mind paying extra to the government (I have an extra $20 taken out each payday) to get it back about now
My plan to reduce my tax burden by shunting a ton of money into my 401k, pretax, has worked... so badly that I appear to owe lots more than usual.

That doesn't make any sense. Throwing money into your 401k lowers your taxable income.

Correct. Either I messed something up in Turbo Tax or something else is going on. I'm having a CPA look into this and have him complete the forms to double check.
i had my refund by mid february. it's all gone.
if only i could claim the stupid dog as a dependent he would pay for himself.

I'd also check with your HR and make sure they had your deductions set correctly.
I hate those bastards. Most of the time I struggle to eat after my bills are paid (and as a freelancer, even paying bills is a challenge). And they still want their pound of flesh.
I got steady paychecks as a freelancer for the first time in 2013. Hopefully I have enough deductions to avoid paying too much...
I also moved to Nevada, where there is no State income tax!

I think that's about where I will be this year.
That whole interest free loan thing is a left over fallacy of the 80's and 90's. Anyone look at interest rates lately? How much did your checking account pay you last year in interest?. Hell if you put it in to a checking account you would probably be loosing money with all the fees they charge for the privilege of them "holding" your money. I am not getting a huge refund, call it a 2 Miata refund, where I could have in turn invested it and MAYBE got 8% and even then I would probably pay tax on that to. No I like letting "the man" keep a little of my money and I don't have to worry about it come the 4/15. Much less stress!!!!
Until tax laws change significantly, it appears that we have our deductions and all figured out pretty well. We generally get about $1k back from the Feds and pay about $250 to the state.
I let the gov't hold my money to pay property taxes with my refund. The timing works well and less money in the savings account for wifey to think we have to spend.
$20K in interest payments, $2K in tools (work expense), and $6K in childcare rack up some serious deductions.
