I have done very little today since the world cup took up the first half of the day. The Mexico vs South Africa match was a really good one. The France vs Uruguay match less so.

I'm not lookin' for trouble or nothin', but I never liked playing soccer as a kid. As an adult, I'd rather watch paint dry. It's dreadfully boring to watch--the soccer, I mean. But that's just me.

Have you ever watched a real soccer? I don't mean MLS or the US team. They both have no style. I personally find basketball, American football and baseball extremely boring by comparison.
Can't stand watching soccer. Boring. And I've watched quite a bit of it.
Now, watching the Mexicans at work watch soccer... That is a lot of fun. I was about 100 yards away, and outside, and Mexico scored. You could hear the roar like I was in the room, 40 Mexicans packed into a room about 20'X20'. That was fun.
Don't see how people find soccer boring. There is 90 minutes of constant action. I mean with American football you have maybe 30 seconds of action then you have to wait forever for the next play and it isn't even like you have to think to play it. You just have to memorize plays. Don't even get me started on baseball or basketball. At least with football there is contact.

90 minutes of constant action? Yeah, I guess... But I see it as 90 minutes of the ball changing possession, moving a little down the field. I'd say that in a normal game, I'm amused for maybe 3 minutes total.

Have you ever played soccer at competitive level?

Not since 3rd grade. Couldn't stand it then, either.
I have found people like soccer a bit more when they played at a competitive level like in middle school and high school because you see the play a bit more in depth. You recognize what the players are trying to or not do.
Two things:
1) If you hate Futbol/soccer, no need to express that in a World Cup thread- and no need to try to convince futbol fans that the game sucks.
2) If you love Futbol/soccer, there's also no need to reply to the haters. If they are bothering to post here, they are stubborn and trying to be "cool" and will not change their minds.
Unless, of course, you all want this thread to be
Soccer Sucks
Futbol RULZ.
back and forth....
Just say'n
Football (soccer to you yanks) and cricket are the two biggest sports in the world. I'll be watching FIFA World Cup off and on, but will be watching the 2011 ICC World Cup more closely.

"There are only three true sports in the world. Bull fighting, Mountain climbing and Auto racing. Everything else is just a game." Ernest Hemingway
On the other hand I was in Italy when they won Espania '82. I now understand the fascination with futbol. The whole country went crazy. Watching it is a little slow compared to hockey but the finesse of the game is fantastic.

Likewise, if you really love soccer, is there really any need for a thread announcing the start of the world cup?

it's not just you...
If Soccer is boring what is golf?
I'm not the greatest fan of soccer, but at least it has action whereas golf isn't as interesting as watching ants carry food back to the nest.

A quote that Hemmingway never said, somewhere along the way it became his. Mostly because Hemmingway considered bull fighting not a sport but a tragedy. (See his book Death in the afternoon and the 1923 article Bullfighting a tragedy.) The quote is supposed to be from Barnaby Conrad, but hey who the heck would know Barnaby Conrad.
I am a vast expanse of completely useless knowledge.
F1 & Le Mans plus I'm watching some DVR races from weeks past to make room for Le Mans. I'm at Limerock with Grand Am at the moment.
Busy weekend no matter your interests.
