Just because they can be rabies carriers, doesn't mean they have it.
I've had bats in my attic for years. Fact of life with a 100 year old house. I only see them a couple of times during the summer. A towel thrown over them, and shaken outside usually does the trick.
Bats are on their way to extinction. They consume many times their own weight in other things that annoy us.

I have absolutely nothing against bats. I appreciate all that they do, I enjoy watching them outside, and I know that the bat population is declining at an alarming rate. I do not, however, like having them in my house.
In reply to Lesley:
Very true. But is it worth the risk?
I'm fine with them outside of my house. They do a great job.
As far as I know, none were killed when they were eradicated- just that they don't live in my home anymore.
On other thing- bat guano. Kinda gross, when it's in your house. And it, too, carries diseases.

I called an exterminator and he said that they are not allowed to relocate bats until August, but he would be happy to come over on Thursday to give me an estimate.

E36 M3's about to get real...
Spend an evening or two outside at dusk, and watch where the bat(s) fly out from. Next evening, cover that hole when they've flown out. Doesn't take much to keep a bat out.
Do you know it's bat(s), or just suspect it? If the latter, you're probably hearing a different critter up there. Raccoons and squirrels are both more likely attic critters.
we had one in the bedroom over winter. came down from the attic through a hole in a poorly built wall. freaked the crap out of me, having something buzzing my face flying back and forth at 2am. when i turned the lights on, it eventually came to rest hanging on a piece of trim, and it was caught in a bucket with a tennis racket lid and released outside. probably to die shortly thereafter because it was -10 that night.

I was thinking more like Pellet Gun, but I like where you're coming from with this, Iggy.
After High School and during community college; I worked for an old lumber yard(circa. 1890's). They had a lot of old barns and buildings spread out over 10+ acres in the middle of a dense residential area. One day the cops got called due to some loud noises coming from one of the barns after hours. Apparently, The owner had a bottle of wild turkey with him and a 16 Ga. He was intent on ridding the barn of the pigeons that were pooping all over his CAH(Clear All Heart) WRC(Western Red Cedar) stored in that barn.
Man I miss that place.
SVreX: “Movin in with Quasi?”
Woody: “He's just misunderstood.”
I had a hunch you’d say that.
