Next week I'm going to San Antonio to visit my cousin-in-law who recently moved there.

I've never been to San Antonio (or Texas for that matter) and I rarely get to be a tourist when I do travel so I'm looking for recommendations for places to see and things to do. I know I want to see the Alamo, but beyond that I'm completely open to suggestions.

Whatcha got?

Riverwalk. Note that it isn't a river so much as a ditch filled with water. Then go west into the hill country.

I see something in San Antonio I'd like to do:

There's a nice little track outside of San Antonio called Harris Hill road www.harrishillroad.com . Also, I would go to Gruene and see Gruene Hall and eat at the Grist Mill next door. San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Wimberly are nice places to visit for the day too.

And if you feel like working on a '46 Ford Businessmans Coupe, my dad could use the help in Blaco.

Mi Tierra's cafe and bakery.

Open 24/7 and expect a line no matter what time you arrive. Take back a big box of baked goods - they're cheap.

You can walk the Riverwalk for hours and it's interesting. There's also the Alamo.

While at the Alamo ask for the basement tour. It's open only by special request and only to small groups. The basement is more unfinished and you can see more what it was like back in the early 1800's. Down there they have what they purport to be the bed that Bowie was killed on. They also have a few samples of Bowie knives the general public doesn't normally get to see. It's free.

The mission tour takes 2 days and lots of driving. It's cool and if you happen to be near one of the other missions definitely go see it. They are usually not in the best parts of town and you can really tell the roads leading up to them were ox cart roads.

It's a shame you aren't coming when it's warmer as you could go float down the rivers in tubes. Lots of relaxing fun. Unless the water's running very fast and then it's exhilerating.

Current San Antonio resident here!

The Riverwalk and the Alamo will be nice this time of year. Touristy, but very neat. I'd make time for a Burger at Bigz. Order it Dirty. You just gotta. Also find time to visit Rudy's or Texas Pride for some Texas brisket.

Fire me off a PM if you hit up any of those restaurants, I love me some Bigz. Or Rudy's, Or Texas Pride.

Schilo's Delicatessen is on Commerce St. right by the Riverwalk. It's an old school German Deli that makes, among other things, really good split pea soup. They also brew their own root beer and have decent German food.

After visiting the Alamo, walk next door to the Menger Hotel bar for a beer. If it's good enough for Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, it's good enough for you.

There's also the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum. No, there's no PETA discount.

If you want to see the Hill Country, check out Gruene, New Braunfels, maybe Luchenbach. Don't expect much at Luchenback - that's the point. Get some barbeque at Lockhart. Go early.

I was in San Antonio on business recently. Just go to Rudy's and eat brisket until you cant walk. Wash it down with some turkey.

Just finished Texian Iliad. It's an excellent book of the revolution and covers the Alamo. Very non partisan.
