I'm currently eating a 5 pound bag of pistachios.
Discuss.
The in-laws recently had to have their septic system pumped out and the screens cleared - the guy doing the work remarked "someone here eats a lot of nuts". Does that help make this the worst thread on GRM?

Well, it's not like you can STOP eating Pistachios. It's like coke. You do it till it's all gone and then lie to yourself about how you're never going to do it again. Or so I'm told.
What are you doing with the shells? If I have a small bag of Pistachios, like an idiot, I tend to put the shells back in the same bag. It's fine for a while, but soon you're sifting through spent shells to get at the precious remaining Pistachios.

I usually hide them under my roommate's bedsheets.
I found this on my wall. 4 lbs to go

I always drag a trash bin next to me when I do pistachios. I get 3-4lb bags at costco. I always wonder why my fingers hurt.
Also, what do you do with the ones that aren't split from roasting?

Costco is the best way to do it w/o buying in bulk. I'd imagine Sams has the same thing, but I refuse to endorse Waltrash.
Troof. But I'm leery of the bulk bin if I see a lot of walking snot factories next to it. Had food poisoning too many times. But it might still be better than the smelly hippies at whole foods.
5 pounds? They'd be writing my obituary tomorrow from high blood pressure, if not "irregularity". But I would have died happy, and with no thumb tips left.
Bastard. I want something salty RIGHT NOW. I don't even really care what it is, as long as it has delicious edible rock in it.

From the all-knowing wikipedia. By the way, I worked in a candy/nut store while in high school, and this is how I remember it, too:
The shell of the pistachio is naturally a beige color, but it is sometimes dyed red or green in commercial pistachios. Originally, dye was applied by importers to hide stains on the shells caused when the nuts were picked by hand. Most pistachios are now picked by machine and the shells remain unstained, making dyeing unnecessary except to meet ingrained consumer expectations. Roasted pistachio nuts can be artificially turned red if they are marinated prior to roasting in a salt and strawberry marinade, or salt and citrus salts.
