A homework assignment that used scenarios about killing and whipping slaves to teach math to nine-year-olds has caused a stir at a Manhattan public school.
A teacher at Public School 59 in New York had asked fourth-graders to write homework questions that blended math and social studies, education officials said. The teacher then used the students' questions, including the slave-related ones, as homework for the class.
One question involved a ship with 3,799 slaves. ''One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive?'' it asked.
Another question stated a slave was whipped five times a day and asked students to calculate how many times a month he was whipped.
Must have been done in honour of Mississippi finally ratifying the 13th amendment
I notice that all the pictures are of black people -THAT'S RACIST! They are not the only ones who have been slaves.
I'll bet there's not a person on this forum that doesn't have slaves in their background.
The statistics bear out that majority of teachers across the country are not the quote, "Cream of the Crop" like the media would lead you to believe.
And why would you expect it? You get to deal with parents who aren't involved in their child's education, often have to come out of pocket for school supplies while getting a paid a E36 M3 salary.

Boy this got floundery awfully quick. Bank bailouts? Really?
Anyway, we had a similar one in Gwinnett county last year. Weird. In Norcross, they should just be happy they can find a kid in the class who speaks ENGLISH!

The etymology of the word "slave" actually comes from "Slav", as in Slavik people. They were captured and put into slavery so frequently that the term for a person you owned was named after a whole ethnicity.

Yeah, I thought this sounded familiar. No surprise it was in Georgia.

Yeah, sorry about that. I couldn't find that top image without the others, and I'm too lazy to cut it out.
Wait, so when people post something that rings with the loud, clear sound of truth, we call it a flounder?!

No, but bringing up bank bailouts in a thread about slave math is, but it z31's case, it was an unintended flounder.
My bad z31. But berkeley Finland any damned way.
Slaves don't have to be black. I pay a the madam weekly to be a slave. Now where is my gimp mask.
Finland is more expensive than Denmark, Fins come to Copenhagen for a cheap vacation. Education be damned I want my dollar menu and large sweet tea!
I just read yesterday that the top rate for a teacher in Ontario, after 4 years service is $92,500 plus a very generous benefits pkg. I guess that's why we don't have a dollar menu.

That or "Looney Menu" doesn't sound very good.
