I wished I had known about Google fi last week. Swmbo, my sister in law and brother in law to be all just changed over our Verizon family plan. Though I believe that no contract was involved, and the 3 of them are all iPhone users.
My Dad is on Google fi with his fiancee and they both have pixel phones. Co worker is in the same boat. They love the service and the phones.
I'm on sprint through my work and was due for upgrading this year. I got the HTC 10. This will be my 5th HTC phone. When comparing specs the 10 is essentially the same phone as the pixel except the screens are different (LCD vs AMOLED). I really like this phone. If I had to pay for cell service I'd be on Google fi.
Moto X Pure here. I have had it for a year and a half of hard use with no real wear. If you don't need the absolute latest features, save your money and get a moto G. $200 and it has quick charge, which is totally awesome.

SWMBO had an LG recently, the camera was awesome (manual setting like f-stop, film speed, aperature), but then it took a software dump. Twice. She's got an S7 now. When I went to get mine last week, we were talking to a sales rep about it. He refuses to sell LG's because they've had so many returns.

I've had my Nexus 6 a little over two years, and have no desire to replace it. I almost bought the Galaxy S5 Active. I mean, like I was sitting at the little counter in a Best Buy store with an S5 Active out of the box in front of me, while the blue shirt fiddled with the computer.
There are usually some trade shows in January where products are announced.
Interesting phones I'd look at if I were in the market:
Lenovo Phab 2 Pro - the first phone with Google's "Project Tango" technology. It uses a pair of cameras to build a 3D model of a space. You can get accurate measurements of objects in a space just by pointing your camera.

The CAT S60 is interesting too. It integrates a FLIR thermal imaging camera, so you can get temperature data, just by pointing your camera.
I went into T-Mobile a couple of days ago. The Google phone isn't compatible with T-Mobile, the Notes are all gone, and the I phone wasn't happening. I wanted a big screen, and I wanted something that wouldn't be obsolete in a year or two. I ended up with a LG V20. Results so far are fair. It has some stupid functions that I will probably get use to and love. It's not as intuitive as the Samsung was. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to get the damn thing to do what I want. That's probably more from me using the same phone for almost 5 years. Old habits die hard.
Notable, the wake up button on the back is a little weird. It's not in a area that a finger naturally lands so I'm still hunting for it half the time. I'm sure the camera lens is well smudged. I still haven't figured out how to add pages to the home screens. I sort my apps onto separate pages, according to what they do, IE, a page of games, mapping/GPS, words, main screen of daily used apps, and so on. This phone has two pages and no way to add another, that I can find. It took two days to find the app list. That should be a pretty prominent button in my book, not hidden under a obscure home screen setting.
The camera is pretty spectacular, unfortunate, the new Photobucket app seriously sucks ass. I'm trying to figure out if I can pull the previous version of it off my old phone and install it on the new one.
I wish the Note 7 hadn't been so explodey. Even better, I wish my Note 2 had stayed alive forever.

I hope you don't need service in the boonies...
I have StraightTalk and switched from their AT&T to prepaid T-mobile for a few months in 2015, but after the flood that October I got sent to places that were more than 10 miles off the Interstate in rural counties and had no service. Talking to the local folks they said that was typical for T-mobile. I switched back after that.

To add a page to the home screen:
On page 2, press and long hold an app.
This will then give you the ability to move the app.
Move the app to the right like you're headed to a page 3.
This will cause a new page 3 to appear.
That's how on my Moto X Pure running Android 6.0
I currently have 3 pages sorted similar to yourself. With some testing I see that I can go to at least 7 pages, maybe more.

I've been with T-Mobile almost 14 years. I enjoy being able to get off the grid. Today is rainy and cold, I'm headed to the national forest to disappear for a while. Many blissful hours of zero contact with the outside world is pretty appealing.

That would be intuitive. So naturally it doesn't work.
This phone is Android 7.
I finally googled it. On 7 you have to pinch in on a home screen. That brings up a option to add another. Stupid. It's like one of those damn video games that hides things you have to find, to move to the next level. I hate those video games.
