And they are now reporting he's gone:

Tom Petty taken off life support (and not because he got better). That sucks. I really enjoy his "Buried Treasure" show on Sirius XM. It's great. Well, I guess was.

Was it Mr. Wallens that has the amazing receipt from a guitar or pawn shop in Florida from when Mr. Petty purchased a guitar from them in the late 60s? It's one of my favorite random things that I've seen pop up on here.

I just posted this on social media, but I'll post it here too.

"It just sucks. It really, really sucks.

Tom Petty was like the cool music playing uncle I, and a lot of other people for that matter, never had. Whenever a Petty tune came on the radio, I would go "oh, cool!" and listen all the way through. His videos, especially the early ones, were some of the weirdest and coolest, and I have fond memories of watching them when I was little. He was a master at his craft, and you flat-out couldn't listen to one of his songs and be in a bad mood afterwards. An all-around cool dude, great musician/songwriter, and losing him is a terrible loss to the music world."

The more and more I think about this, I'm flattened. A friend of mine made a great point: This guy's music was always in the background of life. It was definitely in the background of mine. Whether it was on MTV as I was growing up or on the radio as I wrenched so many times on whatever POS I was wrenching on, Tom Petty was there. While he was a rocker, his music was strangely soothing. It's an unbelievable loss.

And I swear... somewhere along the line, he HAS to be related to Dave Grohl. I mean, look at the evidence. They both had goofy videos and great songwriting, and I even saw the Foos cover Breakdown with masterful perfection a few years ago on tour. They busted it out, seemingly from out of nowhere, just as I was telling my wife that he's Tom Petty's illegitimate son. laugh He's Tom Petty's heir apparent, and he'll pick up that torch.

Basically my goto for any time I need a pick-me-up. Also probably the only song I can still play all the way through on a guitar.

Another icon lost.  And the older I get, the more I realize that 66 is way too young.  RIP, Tom. sad

Growing up poor on a farm in rural South Dakota I only remember seeing MTV 3 times before I graduated high school: The first was whatever summer "cruel, cruel summer" was playing, at my cousins. The second was whenever "sweet dreams are made of this" was playing, at a family friends. The last time was in 9th grade at my current wife's house watching "last dance with Mary Jane" when we were just good friends, waiting for our individual dates to catch up with us for a double date.

That night we discussed getting together in 20 years if nothing else had come along. We got married just before the 20 years was up, over 8 years ago. Tom Petty will always be linked in my head to the woman I married all those years later.

Also, his cameo in the Postman always makes me smile. "Weren't you famous?"

One of the best American artists of all time.  His Wildflowers album will always be special to me--- sometimes music can  bring you back to an exact time and place-- that album is like that.  It was a horrible time for me, but his music helped me through it.  Such an amazing body of work, and by all accounts a very decent human being.

What a E36 M3ty day......  RIP Tom  you were one of the best.
