Technically, it's "Toyoda" who's dead. The company is doing just fine.

Yes, and that's what makes this story doubly sad.

I'm not sure I'd say Toyota the car company is "OK".... unless you think mimicking GM from the 80's is "doing OK".

Let me be clear, I am not rooting for them. They are my least-favorite car company and have been for a while now. However, they sell a buttload of cars and make a buttload of money. Yes, they've had their issues lately, but the whole industry has. I still think that just about any other car company on Earth would trade market share and bank balances with them.

Woohoo!!! my turn!!

I used to love Toyota, not anymore.

When heroin addicts think your car is too boring, it's time for a change.

The new Toyota ads hearkening back to the 60's, 70's, and 80's say it all. Toyota is pulling a page from Chevrolet's playbook.

If the next gen corolla is RWD, offers a stick shift, gets 40 mpg, and weighs less than 2000 pounds, I will buy one. Not holding my breath.

the government mandated safety and emissions stuff in any new car probably weighs damn near 2000 pounds... then you add in 500 pounds of stuff that people need like power windows and AC, and that leaves about 1000 pounds for the body and drivetrain unless you want to have your car be considered a "tank" or 'boat"...

It really shouldn't be that difficult, my Elantra weighs 2660lbs, it can't be that difficult to get it down to under 2300 for a "Cub Sport" edition, and it has 4 doors.

He was about as reliable as an early camry.... shame to see him go.
