Saw the 2012 Scion Tc today. While not my favourite car in the world, the old one was actually a pretty little coupe...

and now there is this....

I think it looks ok. Not great, but it is Toyota, so one only expects soo much.

Not a fan of the FR-S?

I never liked the tC much. It looked OK, but kind of boring. The front fascia reminds me of a modern Volvo for some reason. It's not exactly sporting, either- I drove a 1st. gen. and it felt like a Corolla with a slightly stiffer suspension. Most Scions in my area are owned by high school and college douchebags and douchebaggettes, which has me hoping Scion will have a factory Toyota (GT-) 86 badging option for the FR-S like they did with the xB/bB.

The rear pillar reminds of the Vibe and that off-road throw back thingy they made a while back.

Basically a huge blindspot built-in for mouth-breathing Applicance-owners who never really look in their rearview mirrors, let alone over their shoulders when they change lanes. Lets hope they strengthened that rear quarter to take the abuse that is sure to come to it.

Kinda like the TC for what it is, a moderately fun take on an appliance. Actually got to drive a first generation TC in anger fair bit, even AutoX a few times, it was not going to take FTD but it was fun and dead nuts reliable.

Were they going for a 2-door Avenger?

Toyota only makes good looking machines by accident.

They work hard to quickly correct those accidents.

Never been a Toyota fan. All their E36 M3 is ugly. Have you seen the Sequoia and 4Runner lately? You'd be hard-pressed to name anything uglier.

FWIW, I agree with the OP. The old tC coupe was a fairly nice-looking car. It always looked like it needed something to actually look sporty, but the shape was pleasing to the eye.

The 2nd gen tc is what happens when a VERY conservative company trys to "update" one of it's models. "Let's see, do we copy the old car or do we go bold? Wait, we are Toyota, THE definition of boring...so we copy the old car."

BTW, the tc is based on a Euro-market 4 door SEDAN. Think of a slightly shorter and narrower Camry...and you have the Auris.

To quote CAR magazine:

"So bland we parked one and never found it again. The Auris will never excite."

And one more "fun fact"...Mercury OUTSOLD Scion in 2010. Yeah, a dying brand for retirees sold more units than Toyota's "youth/entry level brand.

I always thought it looks like a whale suffering from a mental defect (most PC way I could word it).

And on the tC... I had a coworker that had a purple first gen tC. He came from a 1993 Mercury Sable so he was proud of his "sports car". It was a decent car for what it was but desperately needed a 6th cog.

I can see where Toyota got their styling cues for the rear quarter window...

What I want to know is why all Toyotas come from the factory looking like the exhaust system is 2 feet of baling wire away from dragging on the ground.

As to the tC, I think the revision is fine. What I have NO understanding of is how/why the tC has a "sporty" image to it. It's effectively a Corolla with two doors taken out, and while 2-door Corollas were hot little hatches 25 years ago, this is absolutely not the case now.

Each time I glance at that image, I see dirty tighty-whities first. Which is just as funny for inspiration.
