"Trade Only" Nonsense

we pay a yearly property tax on, among other things, vehicles …

at the time of purchase, and transfer of title, you are taxed on what the state says the car is worth … it's a declining valuation as the yrs go by

when I bought my Impreza, the state said it was worth $3500 and my title/reg./sales tax (whatever it's really called) was $X amt.

the car had wreck damage, hail damage, high milage … asked for the form to get it re-valued

had to take the car to the local Suby dealer and they had to inspect the car and give a valuation…

it happened that it was pouring the rain that day… the dealership owner was there, and looked out the window at my "new" car … asked what all was "wrong" … thought for a moment, asked me if $500 was a good valuation … I, naturally, said heck yeah

sent the form in to the DMV and that became the new value of the car, and all subsequent taxes were based on that

When I sold my Cummins on CL, about half the interest I got was trade offers. I eventually edited the ad to say I was only interested in hi-roof conversion vans. Instead I got various offers for lifted 4x4's and other various pieces of junk until one guy who finally came to look at the truck showed up with cash. He left with a signed title.

here, the state tells you how much the vehicle is worth … you're allowed to dispute that amt. but you have to jump through some hoops to get the amt. reduced
