Why do I have this trap type plumbing in the hvac condensate drain line from the AC unit? What purpose does it serve?

I don't know where you're at, but here in Texas it would keep scorpions from climbing up the line into your house.

I've been told it's to keep insects out of the coil space.

This is what I was told when they replaced my air conditioner last summer.

Yep, I'm in FL so it's lizards and insects.  Thank you!

Well to build on this a bit, I have a trap just off the air handler in the attic of a 2 story home.  Why would that be?  I don't think insects are going to make it that far and totally ignores the air handler in the crawl space.   That one doesn't have a trap.

It's an air seal for your condensate box. No trap is the same as drilling a hole in your ductwork.

The static pressure from the fan would blow air right out the tube if it wasnt for a water trap with more inches of water than of static pressure. For a home furance, I would expect around 3/4" of water column from the fan and a safety margin in the condensate drain line.
