The only part of this that's surprising is that the referee stabbed a player. The fans would have done the same to him if he made a bad enough call.

The World Cup is going to be there in 2014 which in Brazil will be a much bigger deal for the people. Given Brazil's hooligans and crime rate, I can only imagine how well that is going to go... Probably better then Qatar 2018 though.

Sports, soccer in particular are taken WAYYYYYYY seriously outside of north America, people killing each other over that sport is nothing new.

That was exactly what my response was when I heard about this.
You think you can get bad reaction walking into a sports bar in the US wearing the wrong jersey, you can get berkeleying killed for that in Europe and South America.

Similar story for me, but the fact that he thought at that moment that he needed to use it.
I can see the "need" for the knife. I've been an ice hockey referee for 6 years, and after calling what was honestly a well called game, had to call the police to get an escort from the locker room.
