Anyone ever listen to an older genre of popular music and start to realize what other, newer genres or artists it reminds you of that you wouldn't have thought of it influencing?

In this case, I just felt like listening to old-school surf rock - Duane Eddy, Ventures, etc. Listening to a live performance of the Ventures "Tequila", I totally heard the precursor to Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun". Which I guess totally makes sense that surf rock would influence skater punk in particular and punk rock in general.

But then I'm also hearing the Cowboy guitar influence to the surf rock. "Apache"... pretty much all Duane Eddy.

Which means that Punk Rock has roots going back to Cowboy guitar. Musical evolution is bizarre.

I grew up loving the b52s... Then developed a taste for surf music. One day the connection really stood out to me!

Father some decades ago used to teach a music class called Baroque to Rock. Where he took musical themes and structures from one to the other throughout history.
